Pipe fish what tank mates would be good?

Hi

My girlfriend and me would like to have some pipefish, but I do not what to add them to our 250 G tank, since I am afraid that they won't get any food in there. I have surgeons, Anthia's and quick fish like that.

Would it be okay to have them in a tank with a couple of kaudanies?
Would it be pushing it to add a couple of the more friendly clonwfish also?

I hope you can help me.

I have two banded's with a pair of ocellaris clowns, a blue/green chromis, a banggai cardinal and a whole bunch of inverts. No problems

I don't think pipefish with surgeons and anthias is a good idea...just way too active for those guys. LFS has em in a tank with neon gobies, mandarins and a bunch of coral/rubble.

The pipefish have been in there ever since I first came to the LFS two years ago so it must be fine. It's a low flow 9" deep tank.

I have a trio of Bluestripes in a 20 long with a tailspot blenny, two shark nose gobies, a variety of shrimp, and soft corals.

It really depends on WHICH pipe you're considering. In your case, I'd stick with flagfins, as they can handle both the flow and the temp you're running. Personally, I like Doryhamphus janssi, but bandeds (D. dactylophorus) would also be a good choice. Bluestripes (typically D. excisus) are about half the size of the other two and you MUST be sure that you have a M-F pair or M-F-F harem as males will kill each other pretty quickly.

I think cardinals would be okay. Pipes are hard to feed so be ready to work at it. Good luck. Get some nutramar ova before you get the pipes. And maybe some live tigger pods to tide the over while you food train.

Thanks Small Alien, So actually drogonets and Pipes are in food compatition? I was thinking of offering Live brine shirmps + cyclops.

Would they also take that?

Only freshly hatched brine with the yolk has nutritional value. Also gut load them if possible. Cyclopeeze are good. Prawn roe. Yes, dragnets and pipes both hunt for benthic pods.

we're a bit odd, but we've three orange banded, one Janssi and three DF's in with the following in the SPS tank:

5 Dispar Anthia
8 Bartletts Anthia
2 Anampses meleagrides
1 Amampses melanurus
2 Pearly Jawfish
2 Blue spot Jawfish
2 Yasha goby
2 Marine Betta
3 Fatheads
1 C. jordani
1 C. rubimarginatus
2 C. adornatus
1 C. filamentosus
3 Centropyge multifasciata
various inverts

The DF's eat pods at their leisure off of the rocks and no one bothers them. The orange banded are a different story. The three all eat frozen mysis and I feed them early in the morning before the anthia army comes out and then about an hour after lights out (lights in the living room are still on) when the pipes are hunting for pods on the glass face. The Janssi is actually aggressive. It will go into the middle of the anthia shoal to get what it wants. Beautiful fish.

Here you go. the algae growth is a direct result of my not having tangs in the tank for the last 6 months (the DF's love it as it's full of bugs though). A. maculiceps is getting moved in on Christmas to help with this.
