I have been eyeing pipe fish for well over a year now. When I was setting up my 180, I created one little lower flow cave area so if I ever wanted to get a pair, they would hang out there.

Needless to say that I picked up a pair of banded pipe fish yesterday and this morning, they were hanging out in that area :)

Who else has any in their reef? Thanks.

i had a couple of banded pipe fish... loved them (RIP thanks to MJ Mod)

Thanks Gabe. I picked up a pair of those. I just hope they stay away from the vortechs. I lost a peppermint hog to a vortech awhile back :(

not my luck had them for 8 months and left on vacation just to find them RIP attached to the PH's

Thanks for sharing the great picture. Mine look just like those and are only about 5 inches each.

I just wanted to give an update. The pipe fish are doing great and I will try to get a good shot of them over the 3 day weekend ;)

Alright, where's the updated pipe pic?:D

Intriguing thread. I was under the impression that a special pipefish-only tank would be needed for these guys. I'd love to hear more success (and failure) stories.

If you want to have pipes, their needs ought to be taken into consideration. Ideally, they would have their own tank.

What do they eat and how often? I'd like to know more about their needs from those that have kept them successfully, as I'd love a pair.

Thanks!

+1 on that, Joyce... I've always thought dragon-faces were pretty much the coolest fish in existence.

I recently found one while spending a day at the beach. I believe it's a gator faced pipefish. I found him in a ball of sargassam seaweed and QT him in a ten gallon I have set up for local finds. I fugured he looked to cool to sit in ther and put him in a 12g Aqapod reef with glass cover and 70w supod. He's not shy at all and like to sit in front of LR and pick at anything that moves that will fit into his tiny mouth. He has been doing really good and has found a place to roost under a brain coral for the last cou0ple of months. The thing I worried most was starvation but he eats till he passes out I think. He is really cool to watch and I just wish I could find another one next time I go surfing.

They usually feed on copepods, but I was able to get mine on to cyclopeeze and frozen rotifers, still wont eat the mysis like the bluestripes though.

I've had a blue striped pipefish for over a year now. He's about 3" long and will eat anything, including flake! :eek1: He was given to me for free by a place that was newly set up that didn't have the means to care for one (they didn't order it, it just came in). He's doing pretty good and despite numerous issues that could cause finicky fish to die he seems bulletproof.

I keep them in my full blown SPS reef with tangs, wrasses, magnificent foxface, gobies, anthias and anything else that catches my eye ;)

I also supplement my tank with articpods at help them and my lps out.
