Hi all

long ago before i get into reefing, i collect pipe organ skeleton due to their uniqueness, now i have a big piece as big as an office trash can. So instead of leeting it sits in the basement collect dirt, i want to use it in my reef tank as live rock as i am in need of a large rock this size.

Should it use it? with millions of empty pipes i am affraid they will become nitrate factory as debritus and food will get collected in the skeleton.....

Not too worry. That pourous nature is exactly what you are looking for in LR. I would bleach the coral first and rinse it out and let it dry for several days before sticking it in the tank. It will eventually get all kinds of bacteria and goodies growing in it and will benifit your tank. Plus it may make a cool centerpiece.

I have several in my tank and it works like a charm.
I use it as a base for my corals

The only warning I would offer is that pipe-organ skeletons are not particularly strong, so I'd be wary about piling too much weight on top of them.

i just checked ebay or the "bay" and there is a 21" piece sold for a whoping $600 !!!

maybe it's a bad idea to use mine as rock afterall :)

Looks like that decision is made for you. You can get a lot of live rock for the amount yours is worth. It would be a cool centerpiece. Maybe place them on the ground on either side of your tank.

Thats is so cool and amazing that you have pieces that size. It really does amaze me, I wish I lived near the ocean, I love the ocean hence being in this hobby... hehehe!

PS: I'd take a baseball or softball sized piece if you wanted to ship some... :D
