Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Tanks Sushigirl!

No one has any ideas about my crusty black web net stuff?

Here's another pic, very similar to the first one, but now with 80% more photobombing shrimp.

Reefonaught, strangely your last post isn't showing up here and not sure why, but I can only ever see small pics in Photobucket when I click on a link, they never show full size & aren't clickable. The only thing I can guess is old sponge remains. Has it been there since you got the rock?

Maybe so. I had initially placed the rock that side down, and I didn't notice it at first. It doesn't seem to have morphed any since I first posted, so I'm not as worried as I had been. At first I thought it was some sort of funky mould, but I got much less concerned once I had touched it.
Just thought someone here might be able to either quickly set my mind completely at ease, or insist I pull that rock out ASAP.

Not sure what's up with my posts. They seem to show up or not depending on whether I'm logged in or not, at least until Dino's early am edit. Must be because I'm soooo new. Saw a reference somewhere suggesting that new posts with linked images need moderation to appear. Prolly that.

Thanks anyways!

 If you get a notification and go to the thread and no new posts seem to have been made it probably just got flagged by our spam filter. It likes to flag new accounts that post URLs of any sort.

My edit was a separate issue. Occasionally even if the image tags are right a picture won't show up for who knows what reason. Just going into edit mode on a post fixes the problem :D.

It is a star... Watch where it goes and does not eat what is in your tank. Polyps and such. I have good ones in mine. They are well behaved.

Ive got a few I need help identifying. Im new to the hobby so bare with me.

Thanks so much for the help. Pic 2 is of a small piece of LR witg a open brain coral I believe and some tyoe of mollusk attached directly to tge left of it.

The algae in pic 3 is growing like a weed and it just randomly popped up from nothing.

Yes the pic 5 has a red coral or something attached to another mollusks . Heres a better picture

Those look like sponges. I had some on my zoa before. A fresh water dip knocked them out for me. BUT that is on some LR... So if you do, I would only dip the effected section.

So i think i have a mystery guest i dont want, Im sorry i do not have any pictures to go along with my issue. My tank is only a few months old and being new to the hobby i regularly almost ocd-ly check the levels in my tank. about 2 weeks ago i decided to add a serpent star to my tank up until that point the only noticeable life in it were my two black eyed devils and a hand full of various snails, a day or so after adding the serpent star however i started to notice it looked like the stars arms wer literally breaking every few cm the entire way up from the tip, it wasn't on every arm just one, the next day one arm was completely missing bit n peaces here n there and another arm looked as tho it was breaking apart every few cm this went on for a few days while i searched frantically for an answer and also annoyed the staff at my not so local marine fish store with questions. the awnser I was given was that i was probably having flux in my salt levels causing the star to break down, but as i said i check my levels constantly and know that levels wer and have stayed at 1.023-24 the entire time. sadly the day can and my star wasnt much more then tattered arms and an intact center disk. after the passing of my star i went out and purchased a "red burrowing crap" just for a little extra clean up help, everything has been fine up untill today now, when i turned the day lite on this morning i noticed my crab was missing an eye and also on claw no sign of either in the tank, just recently during a water change i pulled what looked like a very small almost translucent mantis shrimp out of my tank. could this be an issue or is there anyone with any ideas as to what might be happening i would appreciate any info, thanks

The star I'd say your tank is too new & not stable yet, doesn't have to just be salt. The crab could be the mantis, if you're positive it is a mantis & not a pod. Could be one of the fish too, damsels are mean.
