Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Why does that look like majano?

Does it look like this:

anenome_majano_id_wwm.jpg

Sorry I'm still a noob what do you mean? Thanks :)

He means it looks like a majano anemone, which is does, but looks can be deceiving. A majano is a kind of pest anemone you would want to remove. I said nudibranch because of it's little "horns" you mentioned, they are on the bottom right and are a little blurry, right? I believe that is what it looks like. If the critter never moves it wouldn't be a nudi.....has it moved?

Ooh right ok. It did move it went and hid behind the rock. So that means it could be a nudi? Is this what they mean by hitch hiking, it could have come with coral I bought?

Yup, that's a hitcher :) There are good and bad ones, unless I am wrong I think you have that guy who might be a coral eating nudribranch. They take on the color of what they eat. Although they are pretty, so are zoas and he will eat them all.

I would remove the whole frag and dip it in fresh water for a few minutes and watch for eggs and damage on any other frags.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I chose a good one then didn't i? Hahaaa!! Just on a side line... In the coral there seems to be a little clam. (The sort that you find the shell on the beach) what could thus be? Hard to get a pic as when the polyp is open you can't see it?

People find lots of bivalves (clams are bivalves). I personally have never heard of a bad one yet. Can't tell you species or anything without pics but it is probably fine. I have a neat green one that came in on some rock from years ago. Most of us gets bad hitchers, just a part of live rock. It is worth it to me though, the good critters make up for it. I have had zoa eating nudis before, it wasn't a huge deal. Just had to be on the lookout and dip the frags.

Are zoa bad? I've just google a bivalve and yes that is exactly what it looks like! It never moves! Is it dead?

Anybody know what this worm is. Its flat and slow, didn't mind the torch being shone on it at night, unlike a bristleworm that would scuttle away, this guy just sat there.
Sorry about the iphone pics

It looks kind of like a stomatella snail in the second picture, but the more I look at it, I'm starting to think otherwise. Lets see what others think.

The long tentacles scream Stomatella. Hard to tell much about it from the pics, but it's probably in full camouflage mode, making it difficult to pick out any details.

Cheers,

Don

I found this on my cats paw today. Any ideas?

Does anyone know what these two critters are? The first thing is the purple cluster at the back. I thought it was just a bit of marine "dust" haha!!! It's stuck to the live rock and just waves around!

The second thing is just slightly in front it looks like bits of shell encrusted into the rock.. That's what I thought it was initially.. But it seems to be growing?

Thanks

This shrimp was in my filter sock this morning. He resembles a couple of pistol shrimp I saw when I put my rock in the tank 8 months ago (TB saltwater) but he's maybe 1/3 the size, about 1/2". The bigger pistols don't seem to go to the sand but stay in the rocks.

Is it a pistol?

Just bought some live rock today and after getting it settled in its new home saw this little guy crawling around. He is about the size of a small pea. I can tell he is a snail but good or bad(are there bad snails?)

I'm not familiar with tank hitchhikers but it could be a cat hitch hiker. Looks kinda of like a roundworm but a little dark in color. I'd have your cats stool tested to see if he/she had worms... Just in case

Hi there I found this two critters in mind glass could you help me identify them. Thanksuploadfromtaptalk1391447176982.jpguploadfromtaptalk1391447199482.jpg

Fist pic looks like a harmless stomatella snail. Second one is a chiton. Third is flatworms. Those you'll want to syphon out.
