cant really get a good look at the claws from this pic and fro what i can see from this pic the coloration doesnt look like any emerald crab ive ever seen. but like i said before if its not bothering anything in your tank your good just keep an eye on it.

Firstly, hello. New to reef keeping, first tank is currently a week into cycling, been exciting finding all the stuff crawling out of the rocks, some good, some not so good. But there have been these 3 things ive been unable to get any real ID on. Hoping someone here can shed some light on them

These are about 1cm tall, they close up when I turn the lights out and havnt really grown much so im not that worried, but would like an ID

This group of things are about the size of a 5c piece, like the previous, they close up when the lights go out, and again, havnt really multiplied as far as I can see

Lastly, I assumed this group of things were all dead coral part of the rock, but the last couple days I noticed the brown ones opening up and some movement, white (well green from algae now) ones are definitely dead though

Looking forward to years of a great hobby

Hi everyone! I have my first new tank up and currently cycling, and am pretty excited to be getting in to this hobby. I have a 65g with 15 gallon sump coralife skimmer and about 400gph flow through there. I also have a 350 gph owerhead giving me some circulation in the tank. Amoonia ~.1 (normal for the cycle I believe) nitrite 0 nitrate >0 (enough for a change but not a real reading) sg 1.024 temp 78.

My question is this, I added about 30 lbs of live rock and 40 lbs of live sand to start off with, but I had a SNAFU with my heaters where when the rock was added the temperature was closer to 69-70. It warmed up over the next hour to stable. I am worried as to how much die off in the live rock there would be. There was also a pretty thick sediment layer on the rock from the initial cloudiness in the water. I cleaned them off while changing out some water with a soft brush, but they had been like that for a few days.

I see a lot of what might be dead(??) things on there and want to make sure all is well. I've had it (the rock) for about 2 weeks. Mostly I am just nervous as I am new to it all, and have no idea what to expect, or when to expect seeing some of the usual hitchhikers etc! Thanks!

It's time to play everyone's favorite game: Sponge or Tunicate! Both can be weirdly shapeless amorphous blobs - so which is it? Only their mothers know for sure (and I'm pretty sure not even then, since they are likely asexual!)

Tonight's contestant is in the attached photo - so is it sponge or tunicate?

Thanks for playing!

P.S. in case you aren't sure which things I'm talking about, it's the grey-transparent blobs in the middle
P.S.S. I can't tell what they are, so as far as I'm concerned your answer is right. :)

Die off is natural, you're not really hurting too much by having some die off. Just don't put anything living in and it'll all grow back in a month or so. Just keep an eye on your ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. They'll let you know when your cycle is finished. Don't panic and for the love all that is right and beautiful, go slow.

They look more like tunicates to me, but I could be wrong. Either way though, they're both harmless.
