Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Returning to the hobby!

Returning to the hobby!

Hey Everyone,

Just returning to the hobby and am building out a 180g mixed tank. I purchased the rock and some fish from a guy that was shutting down his tank. The rock is still in my old 90g, while I get the last bit of plumbing done today.

However, the rock had some good and possibly bad hitchhikers I need help identifying. Thanks in advance for the help! Trying to get started on the right foot and not begin with problems I can avoid.

1 - Possible Mini Carpet Anemone?

2 - No clue, but suspect some sort of anenome again. They are really purple. Three on one rock, adn you can see one is retracted like an anenome.

3- This stuff covers a good portion of a few rocks. Very purple with the tiny star polyps.

4 - Another Anenome looking creature. These are more green and grow in another group on a single rock.

5- More Mini carpets??

6 - Last but not least - This one looks like a pest. It is an anemone of some sort, but I suspect it is no good.

Hi there Snowdog. You have...

1 Maxi mini anemone
2 frilly mushroom
3 star polyps
4 more frilly shrooms
5 ricordeas
6 tulip anemones- pretty but can become very invasive. Nuke them like you would aiptasia.

hi can anyone help id these critters and whether they're good or bad? these live rocks were added over the weekend and noticed these critters pop

1st looks like some sort of polyp on my hermit crabs shell
2nd and 3rd are pics of some stringy type of critter looks like some type of worm
and the last two looks to be some sort of anemone type critter.

thanks

The second & the third picture look like spaghetti worms. (harmless) The forth & the fifth picture is an aiptasia. (bad) I'm not too sure about the first picture, but I wouldn't treat it any differently than you would an aiptasia or a majano anemone. There should be all kinds of information here at RC regarding these pests.

White worms growing from zoas?

White worms growing from zoas?

Noticed these a few weeks ago; getting a lot of light. The blurriness is sort of a fuzziness and sometimes the tips look like they are prongs.

Should I remove?
Thanks.

Thanks.

If your referring to the white things in the picture, they're just sponges. No worries.

What is this on my glass, hydroids? It swims like jelly fish, it is in my fuge, should i keep it there or remove it?

What is this?

What is this?

I set up my reef tank again and got about 30 lbs of live rock from a friend. I also used 40 lbs of agra alive bahamas live sand. This morning I wake up and see this thing covering one of my hermit crabs. When I shined a flashlight on it it slivered away. No idea what it is and the hermit crab did not survive the encounter. Not sure if it was hiding on the rock or the packaged live sand.Any help is appreciated.

Polyclad flatworm. It's a killer. You'll want to remove it if you want to keep snails, clams and other sensitive inverts in your system.
