Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Ok, who's this little snail? Volcano shaped shell, not spiral.

Also, on some cultured reefsaver I just brought home, I found a patch of what I can only describe as looking like strawberry skin, only it's transparent (clear in color) with black specks that look like, and are arranged like, strawberry seeds. It's a patch about the size of a quarter.

I'm not really sure about that "strawberry skin" you mentioned, but that tiny little snail might be a harmless Limpet.

I was doing an experimental hydrogen peroxide dip on some rocks with zoa's to deal with some stubborn algae and this bad boy came flying out, about 2 inches long. he was followed by the other two.

I have seen worms before but never with the stingy legs.

Would he have been bothering the Zoa's a few months ago when they stopped opening properly?

If it's the "real" Turbo snails (i.e. Turbo sp.) then yes, I had a lot of small ones when I had them. The Astraea "turbo" snails don't usually reproduce successfully in tanks, as far as I know, though.

I always thought turbo snails were broadcast spawners. A puff of smoke, the release of some eggs and wallah! That looks pretty messy IMO. Are you sure there's not an abundance of Vermetid snails in that area?

Not that I'm aware of. I had zero snails at all that I ever saw, anyway. I bought 6 turbo snails from Petco a couple weeks back. And now, the "webbing". LOL... it's not a pretty sight, but if it's part of the turbos life cycle, I'm cool with it. Just didn't want it to be anything bad happening.

If you haven't already, you might want to post those pictures in the Other Invertebrates Forum. There's a couple people there who are very good at identifying things for people. I think one of them would probably be able to tell you whether your not your Turbo snails did that or not.

FWIW when my turbos reproduced it was them puffing white clouds into the tank (sperm) and then laying eggs never saw webbing like that during the whole process. I think there is something else going on because this does not seem like turbo snail spawning to me.
