Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Also any idea what this is? Sry for blurry photo. It is exactly what it looks like though. No mouths or discernable features, just lobes. Macro algae?

BTW, does anyone know how I would know the difference between a tube worm (feather duster) and a Vermetid? They look similar and I am worried that I have Vermetids on my stag coral. It's not doing well but everything else is flourishing

My guess is limpit but cant really see details. They usually hide in a crevice at day and scramble around later. Google to check?

Thanks, it does seem limpet-like but it doesn't move around and I thought limpets lay eggs. This thing spit out live babies.

If you have the doubt kill it. One less it's not going to make a difference.

The feather duster actually have feathers coming out of the tubes, looks like a flower of some sort. The Vermaid not... It's just filaments coming out.

I am going to kill them tonight - they do not look like the other feather-duster type tube worms I have and can recognize.

Thanks!!

Little red things on live rock

Little red things on live rock

Well, I'm back with more questions! I have really started studying my tank lately and it seems every time I look at it I notice some kind of new growth. So far, I think most of them have been good - but I am still discovering(asterina stars, pineapple sponges, bristleworms, etc.).

Now I have this new stuff all over a piece of rock and I don't know what they are either LOL. They look like little tiny red coral starts, but I don't know - any guesses from anyone out there?

They are all the little red things that look like very small red trees.

OH and I failed to mention they are all growing upright - some of the pics look sideways because I had to turn the camera to get the pic

I did see that on the hitch hiker link, but wasn't sure and it doesn't give any specifics on it. It does say that it's not bad thing - but what is it? Is it an algae, a coral, a worm......? And will it go away as my tank ages or continue to grow? My tank is about8mosold- converted to reef from FOWLR that was 5yrs old

They're harmless foraminiferans. Nothing to worry about, just cool looking things that grow from the live rock. They won't get any bigger than they are.

Thanks for all the info! It's so cool discovering all this new stuff as time goes on...always learning and discovering!!

Hundreds if these in my sand bed. My thought is a cirratuli worm but can someone confirm?

What type of coral is this? Looked like montipora but it's not. And yeah I know about the algae it's being dealt with. Lol

Rock Hitchhiker

Howdy folks! New here, mostly new to marine aquarium keeping, and wholly new to whatever this is on my rock.

The pics kind of suck, as the thing is tiny. I see white/blue points on the tips of one, and it is definitely motile.

This is a 10-gal tank of just hermits; I was neither ready not expecting to deal with anything delicate or precious, especially in this small a system. There may also be two of said things, but I can't see enough to tell if it's attached together or not.

What is it, and will it be okay for a few months while I cycle a larger tank? I can grab liquid food as well if it's needed.

Good old aptasia. Annoying, kinda bad (if it stings coral or you think its ugly), in some tanks it is not actually able to grow (like mine) but most of the time it is super invasive.... my .02

Been watching this guy slowly grow since coming in on my live rock back in October (From TBS) however I haven't been able to identify it. Believe it is some sort of LPS, thoughts?

Then I also found this guy crawling on the glass this morning. Could be some sort of nudibranch but resembled closer to a shell less limpet, about the size of a nickel. Any thoughts?
