Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

I just googled it. So many colorful variations and the ones in my tank are just black/grey....

Are you refering to the black mass in the center? That's a sponge. They come in myriad varieties and colors. I have several yellow and black. Usually in lower light, lower flow areas. They filter feed.

Noticed some cool colors on this skeleton at the lfs at the time I thought it was some cool looking coraline and was given it with my purchase that day (who wants to buy a skeleton).. it has grown quite a lot since then. Is this a sponge? I'd please? KIMG0511.jpg

They look like "Texas Trash" palys. They spread quickly. Some are highly toxic as well. Google "palytoxin" or do a search on the site. It's sent people to the ER and gave them conditions they've never fully recovered from and killed other pets. Not something to mess around with. Do some searching and make sure these aren't the toxic kind.

A clown fish lost his tail yesterday. And was found dead today. Any chance this worm did it? Still a really new tank. Only 1 small peice of live rock in tank. The rest was dry rock. So between this worm and my black brittle star I cant figure out. What happened.

This looks like a bristle worm, and I doubt that it was responsible.

I don't think the worm or the brittle star had anything to do with the fishes death, but they may have nibbled on it after though. That's kind of what they do.

Hi, I have recently bought more live rock and I received a hitchhiker that I noticed after I put it in the tank. I have attempted to research it but have come up with many different options. Can someone help with the ID? Thank you!

Just witnessed this guy stand at attention and release what I assume are eggs. Any idea what kind of snail? No visible shell.

Does anyone know what these are, and if they should be removed???? Looks like I picked up a hitchhiker from the coral, although it was bayer dipped twice, as well as fresh water dipped, and removed from their plugs.
