Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Hi Everyone,

I have this worm in my 20 mixed reef biocube and I can't get it out. He feasts on my CUC and I'm pretty sure he ate my Possum Wrasse. I've tried traps and the stocking trick with no success, I've tried grabbing him but he's sooooo fast back into the rock. Can someone maybe please identify it and give me any tips on getting it out??? I'm about to do a FW dip on the rock I think he's in as my next step. Check out the below pic:

Looks like it could be an oenone fulgida worm. You definitely want it out of there. I'd try taking the rock out & squirting soda water into the hole/s in the rock you think it's in & see if it bails. If not, move to the freshwater dip. A freshwater dip will kill off all bacteria on the rock, so depending on the size of the rock & with the small size of your tank you'll want to bear in mind it can affect the tank's ability to process ammonia. Squirting something into holes, IMO, would wipe out less bacteria.

It scared the tar out of me. When I stuck the rock in the tank my thumb touched the underside. I thought it was a ricordea for an instant, but it noticeably moved and I jumped. It has a pretty neat kinda rainbow pattern that my phone didn't capture very well.

It's very tiny, though. Only about 3/4 of an index finger length across.

They don't get to be very large. I have one. They come in many colors. Nice score!

I ended up taking the rock I think he was in out of the tank. I am in the middle of upgrading my tank and I had to aquascape anyway so it turned out A-OK. I just hope I got him. On the bright side, I did happen to catch the Gorilla Crab who has also been a PITA also
 
I got him!!!!! :dance: This morning I smashed the rock that I had removed from the tank and there he was!!!! He came out in a bunch of gross pieces and a huge slimeball so unfortunately there are no pics. Now I am killer free and ready to procede!!!!
 
Hey guys :wavehand: I am new to the forum and marine aquariums altogether. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me identify some of the things on my live rock. I have searched and searched but keep coming up empty. I'm sorry I am still figuring out how to post on here with pictures so I haven't had a chance to circle the items in question :worried:

In this pic it's the little brown spikey thing in the right hand corner

The little red things coming out of the rock. There are a lot of these all different sizes. Most of them are round with small spikes.

This pic has a few on the top left there seems to be something white and porous I was thinking maybe a sponge but didn't see anything like it online. In the center there are a ton of little black dots (they don't move) is this mold? Also the little brown tubes in the center?


Any help is greatly appreciated. Also If you see anything else In the pics please feel free to let me know :spin2: thanks
 
Not sure on pic 1, could be coral remnants or sponge remnants. Depending on where the rock ame from, probably sponge.

2nd is foraminiferans. They're harmless & should be represented in this thread somewhere.

3rd pic I would guess sponge, can't really get too much detail from the pic.

What is this little white thing below the SPS? Another kind of a polychaete? Dangerous?

It's been there for a week or so (maybe a couple weeks), then a few days ago I saw something like that near one of the pumps outlet, and today, I saw another one, at the other pump. I also think I had seen something like this a few days prior to noticing this one on some rock tip, and it looked a bit like a mini-mini BBT polyp, not sure, and it was more brown-ish. It seems to have disappeared (or moved), but then I saw this one and the others.

It doesn't seem to have come as a hitchhiker with the SPS, that was clean (I guess) when I got it. As I have a gazillion copepods/amphipods etc. everywhere I am not really surprised to see a new living critter every single day...
 
Two new occupants have appeared in my tank. I'm thinking that the first one is a strawberry anemone. Can anyone confirm or deny that I.D.?

Second one looks like maybe some type of algae, but it seems a little strange that it just popped out and stopped growing. It's just a bright green stalk about 3/16" long. There's a second one just like it across the tank, and they have both just stayed pretty much the same for at least a month now.

The second one appears to be neomeris annulata, a calcium-based algae. As far as the first one goes, my guess would be a ball-tipped anemone.
 
I have a couple mushrooms(?) that suddenly appeared in my tank... I THINK they're mushrooms, but the stalk is a good three inches, so I don't really know.
