Pix & ID: Critters that come in your rocks: the good and the bad.

Can someone tell me what the main cause of getting bad critters are? Im new to reefing and just started my first tank. So far I have live sand and clean/dry rock inside the tank with 2 clowns. I would like to start a healthy bunch of copopods. Really interested in the mandarin goby...

Most of the time they come in on live rock that was purchased from the local fish store. They hide out in the rocks and after a few days they decide to come out to play.

Does anyone have any clue what this is? It almost looks a hydra, except that it's about 1000x larger than a hydra should be. Good? Bad? Just plain ugly?

Any idea what kind of crab? I can tell his legs are banded. His claws do not 'appear' to be very sharp or darker tipped. Rough pic, he is very elusive. He picks algae. Seems black/very dark maroon.

(and if anyone knows what the zoas are, top right (bottom left are bleached from the LFS, so no trying to figure those out yet)...that would be a bonus :) ) This pic is with flash.

What you have there is a Black Mithrax Crab. Frequently they come attached to live rock. There are lots of reports of them not being reef safe, but I had one for about a year and he did no damage to any of the corals. At night when the lights were off, though, you could hear him scraping the rocks...kinda creepy. I guess you take your chances with this one?

I am guessing this was not meant for my crab ID going by the next post you had with the quote :P

Haha, nope. My bad, still new to the forum method of communication. I do, however, believe that your crab is of the Xanthidae Family. I have one in my tank, riding along with some LR. He's been in there for a month and hasn't done any damage yet, but both my Midas Blenny and myself have our eyes on him!

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum and the hobby, I have a 130 litre tank that's currently cycling with LR. As I'm sure you all were at this stage, I keep peering into my tank on the off chance I might see some interesting hitch hikers. Well, mission accomplished, I found these guys:

From what little I understand they look like Aptasia, but I'm not 100% certain and I'd like an a few more opinions before I go and wipe them all out!

Black & White thing - any ideas?

I have one of these guys too. Hides most of the time. I barely ever see him. When I do it's mainly a claw sticking up trying to pick algae off of the rocks like the emerald crabs do. He hasn't caused any problems for me yet. I think he was on a rock I got from a LFS.

Two hitchhikers with my Xenia

Two hitchhikers with my Xenia

I got a piece of Xenia from a fellow hobbyist, and on one end of the coral skeleton where the Xenia is growing I see these two critters. The spiral, segmented shell occasionally has a tuft of short, white tentacles (?) showing. The other "glob" at the left seems to be growing.

This is quite magnified--the visible sand grains are Fiji Pink.

Thanks in advance!
Hallie
