Planted sw tank

Ok, my interest in macro algae has escalated to a point where I think Im going to do a whole tank devoted to them. I have an eclipse tank hood that came with my 37 gallon that I dont use anyway, so Im going to buy a 20g long and use that hood. Im already getting some japanese maple caulerpa from luvabunny, does anyone else have some interesting macro they would part with? Suggestions for livestock for this very small tank would also be welcome. What are your thoughts on non photo synthetic corals as an addition? Could I even keep any without the addition of a chiller?

Lauren, what temp are you looking to keep the tank? That will decide some of your livestock.

I'd also search on some of the other specialty forums.

Sounds like a cool tank.

Your tank will stay cooler than your reef tank, if for no other reason than the lighting. Eclipse hoods put out little to no heat. I don't use heaters on any of my tanks, so they maintain pretty much room temp all of the time.

The actual name of the red algae you will be getting is red titan. I made up the Japanese Maple part to go along with the other thread. I also have dragon's breath, taxifolia, a red bristly one I haven't identified yet, and a type of grape (the name escapes me right now), all of which are available if you like. I normally sell/trade my caulerpa's, but it's always cheaper than buying retail.

I am looking for some other algaes/caulerpas. There are a couple of decent sites which offer them. Maybe we could go in together to get some, since other than what I already have is difficult to find locally.

Your NPS corals probably won't need a chiller, but feeding is usually a major issue. Some use a phyto drip on a regular cycle. IME tho, in a 20g tank filled with caulerpas/algaes, you aren't going to have much room for corals.

You've got my number. Give me a call when you want to come by.

Thanks April! I would like to get some ochtodes if you wanted to go in on some. I would prolly have to add actinic to get the blue to really pop though

Let me know if you get a site with some dragons breath. I am looking into adding more macroalgeas to my seahorse tank. Have a lot growing right now even have hattadone(sp?) actually growing in my tank and the nitrates are not high. I may place an order at a place that is listing a bunch of different microalgeas as well.

I can supply you guys with some starters of Halimeda from Hawaii. This stuff grows all over my tank and I have to trim it often. It likes high levels of calcium though as it deposits calcium in its tissue so keeping an eye on calcium levels would be needed if there are no corals in the tank.

I was in the Edmond petco the other day and they had their $1 a gallon sale... thought about snagging up a 20L and a 40. think the sticker said it was going on till the 23rd

yeah, but they are only applying that sale to 10, 20 and 40. So I couldnt get the 29 on sale :(. That may be a deciding factor lol.

I wish I had known you were looking for a tank. I ran across a 29g tall at a garage sale yesterday. They wanted 5.00 whole dollars for it, with 2 lights.

I do know of an ex-COMAS member who has had some medical problems and has emptied her tanks. She has several up for sale. She had either a 20l or a 29, along with some much larger ones. E-mail me at luvabunny2@cox.net if you would like her e-mail address. She lives in Yukon.

I am curious to watch this develop. I've recently found myself quite a bit more interested in pruning my 'fuge.

I would be careful on your plant selection, since I've had a single type of caulerpa completely infesting the place.

If you're still looking for tanks, I may have a small one you'd be interested in. I know I've got two small(er) spares- I will check what size they are and get back to you.

April,
Emailed you. Im now thinking, I should just get a big tank and turn either my existing 20g or 37g into the planted tank. lol. I dont know. I would have to buy the equipment very slowly because I am poor

Well, just impulse bought a 90g system on craigslist so this is going to have to hit the backburner for a while... to be continued!
