Was wondering why one of of the fire fish will survive long term I've had both now for a year?

After a year, you should be fine. It is almost a certainty that you have a bonded pair (which may or may not be mating). Two of the same sex have a dominance issue where one will intimidate the other which subsequently starves to death.

If they are bonded would they stay next to each other? There almost always on separate sides of the tank, and other times they swim together.

Just started an aquarium. 48 gallon reef octopus tank with 10 gallon sump. Using Skimmer and chemi-pure. Please help me choose the fish i can add to this aquarium.
currently have:
Lawnmower Blenny
5 snails
Citron Goby(still in 20 gallon quarantine tank)
Royal Dottyback(still in 20 gallon quarantine tank)

Not predictable. When they are NOT bonded, it usually shows up 4-6 months down the road which is characterized by one disappearing.

The royal dottyback will limit what fish you can add. As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons; however I am always happy to review any stocking plan as long as you refresh my memory of existing fish and tank size.

I posted this in another section but think it fits better here.

I am looking in to which fish I can stock my tank with and was hoping to get some help/suggestions. I want to be sure I don't over stock or add any non-compatible fish.

Tank info: 63 gallon 48L x 20W x 16H
Skimmer: CAD light 1150
Sump: will add about 20 Gallons water to system

For sure I would like to add the following:
1) One Spot Foxface
2) Percula Clowns
1) Purple Dartfish

If compatible and space remains I am interested in:
1) Kole Tang
1) Flame Angelfish
3) Blue Chromis
3) Kaudern Cardinal Fish
2) Twin Spot Gobys

I realize this configuration is overstocked, but I'm not sure how much I would need to remove from the list to make it work. I think the Gobys ought to be OK since they will be on the bottom, but I'm not sure about the rest. I would imagine it will be one or the other with regards to the chromis/cardinal fish and the tang/angelfish (if the foxface doesnt prevent either of those all together)

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

1) Kole Tang needs a larger tank but if no other grazer, might be marginally ok
1) Flame Angelfish needs a larger tank but if no other grazer, might be marginally ok
3) Blue Chromis will become one over time
3) Kaudern Cardinal Fish one male plus female tank raised would be ok; a third would be killed
2) Twin Spot Gobys expert level fish that would starve to death in this sized tank

I realize this configuration is overstocked, but I'm not sure how much I would need to remove from the list to make it work. Thanks for the help snorvich. About the Foxface; I have been reading up on these and thought the footprint/length of the tank was the most important factor for them. Live aquaria shows them as needing only a 70 gallon tank, so I though 4ft of swimming space would be sufficient. What size tank would you recommend for keeping one? About the Twin spot goby, would a single one survive in this size tank? The tank will have the same footprint/sandbed as a 90 gallon so I'm confused about why it is unsuitable. For the blue Chromis, I thought they were peacefully and best to be kept in groups but I read some more posts about them and I see what you mean by possibly becoming one.

Thanks again for the help.

edit: deleted recommendation request for "schooling" type fish after reading previous posts saying you don't make recommendations.

If you have no other grazers such as dwarf angels or tangs, you will be marginally ok. But you should supplement with nori

No.

It is a feeding issue. Two spot gobies eat micro fauna present in your sand bed. These fish are difficult at best, impossible long term at worst.

Over time, one will become dominant and kill the rest.

Thanks again for the help.

there are no fish that truly school and the ones that shoal require a larger tank with a lot of flow

Thanks again. It's nice to finally feel like I have a starting place and direction. I'll work on researching and revising and come back with a new list later. While it's a daunting task, reading through previous sections of this thread is helping with supplying viable options. Thanks again for all the help.

The variables are not as straight forward as one might hope. Behavior then territorial imperative (which implies ecological niche) then feeding requirements and finally size all are relevant in that order. Tank length always trumps tank volume for most ecological niche evaluations. Metabolism is relevant with regards to feeding requirements. And energy level is very relevant with regard to tank length.

2 redmargin fairy wrasse
2 chalk bass
4 blue or green assessors

2 redmargin fairy wrasse a single needs a larger tank, a pair needs a much larger tank
2 chalk bass must introduce concurrently; may or may not stand up to the pseudochromis above
4 blue or green assessors a group requires a larger tank and only one male per tank; may or may not stand up to the pseudochromis above

So I wound up getting a yellow clown goby for my pico (Fluval Spec V). Still working on things but since I last posted I added a heater, the goby, and a zoanthid.

Two questions, what can I put in there with the Goby such as inverts to keep the tank clean? I was thinking of an emerald crab, but I hear that when they get bigger they become more likely to eat fish. So I was thinking something like hermits or snails. Any suggestions on which kind would be good for my tank, and my goby?

Also, my live rock has this orange stuff on it, any idea what it is and if it's something I need a cleaner for or something that's just natural growth?

TIA!

Since snails and hermits are mutually exclusive because hermits will kill snails, pick one or the other. A cleaner shrimp might also be interesting.

Oh, I thought crabs ate hermits for their shells, didn't know snails and hermits didn't get along. If I had to choose I think I'd go with a hermit, but I don't have any idea which are good at eating what.

A shrimp would be nice, I recall a recommendation on a sexy shrimp, not sure if it still applies.

Well since thread is about marine fish compatibility, I need to get this thread back on subject.

Here's what I have so far: 40B w/ 20L sump
Astrea & Turbo Snails
Skunk & Fire Shrimp
Peppermint Shrimp
Randall Goby/Tiger Pistol Pair
LPS

Proposed additions:
Helfrichi Firefish - next kid in the pool
Gold Assessor
Tailspot Blenny
Possum Wrasse
Pink Streaked Wrasse
Cardinal - some type of peaceful one kept singly
Sexy Shrimp

Is there anything else I can look at fish wise that won't share the same niche as the fish listed above? Thank you again for all your help.

Excellent stocking plan. I am concerned about any cardinal fish with sexy shrimp

I will skip the cardinal since I have my heart set on the shrimp. Would a single black axil or blue reef chromis work with the above list? Thanks again.
