I have a 14 gallon nano cube. I am going to put old (dead) live rock in there. Should I put a live rock in there so it can spread? Or small peice of coral, or? How about live sand? Or should I just use my old crushed rocks/gravel? I'm just not sure how to start out yet.

This thread is only about marine fish compatibility. For answers to this and similar questions, start your own thread in New to the Hobby and you will get a lot of help.

No worries. I know you look at a ton of these everyday. I appreciate your time.

So I'm leaning towards revising as follows;
93gallon cube DT
29gallon sump
20xhigh gallon duplex fuge

1x Randalls Goby and pistol shrimp
1x Purple firefish
1x Yellowhead Jawfish
2x Green Mandarin(bonded pair) possibly only one depending on how the pod populations develops
2x Darwin Ocellaris
1x Flasher Wrasse(Carpenters or McCoskers)
1x Atlantic Longnose Butterflyfish
1x Blackcap Basslet
1x Fisher's Dwarf Angel watch the Fishers closely and have been thinking of converting the QT tank into a nano reef after this one is up and placing corals that the angel takes a liking to in that.
1x Tomini Tang

is there a niche I'm not filling or an overlap/conflict I haven't considered?

Thanks again.

I do not see any conflicts. I always first look at inhabitants of the same ecological niche to see if there are any conflicts. The only risk area is two mandarins, but if the refugium is active for a while first, that should be ok.

Thank you in advance for your advise. I currently have a 150 gal DT with a 50 gal refugium. 120 lbs live rock, 6" DSB with additional shell and rubble. Protein skimmer, Carbon, GFO, & Bio-pellets.

Looking to add:
3-4 Blue Chromis will reduce over time to just one
2-3 Yellowhead Jawfish be sure your tank is configured correctly for jawfish
1-2 Neon Goby short life span of 1.5 to two years and only one will work unless a bonded pair
1 Chalk or Lantern Basslet
1 Royal Gramma

fine except as annotated

all looks good and well thought out

Getting back into the reefing thing after about a 7 year break. I'm wanting to get the same thing or close to what I had before.

ATM I have a:
standard 29 gallon 30Lx12Dx18H
Aqua C Remora
30" Current PC 2x65watt Light(left over from previous reef tank)
multiple powerheads for current, I think I have about 7-8 of them(again left over from previous reef tank)

Looking to get about a 2-4" live sand bed, about 20lbs of base rock and 20lbs of live rock.
Possibly a 10gal sump underneath in the stand.

Soft Corals, hammers, leathers, ricordea, and the like
2 Perc Clowns
1 Neon Dottyback very aggressive but if added last and no other fish are ever added, you should be ok
1 Lawnmower Blenny
1 Cleaner Shrimp

I had this setup going before for about 2-3 years before when I lived in S. Florida until the triple hurricanes hit and wiped out 3/4 of the tank. The other 1/4 I gave to a friend who had a 110 gallon running on a generator and just broke my tank down. Just wanting to get an idea of what you all might think.

Currently have a Picasso Trigger and Porcupine Puffer. 125g fowlr

Looking to add:
Dot and dash Butterfly
Bi-color Angel

any issues with any of them getting along? Read that the butterfly needs calm tankmates. The trigger and puffer aren't really aggressive except when it comes to food time, which the butterfly wouldn't get the same food anyways.

Also, would either of them Go after my pencil urchins or tuxedo urchin?

Hi - In my 125 with a 40g sump/refugium (Aquamaxx CO-2 ConeS skimmer) I have the following:
2 Pajama Cardinal
Lawnmower Blenny
Blue Chromis
Purple Firefish
2 Wyoming White Clowns
McCoskers Flasher Wrasse
Flame Angel
Ruby Red Dragonnette
Foxface
Yasha Goby and Shrimp

I'd like to add:
Pyramid Butterfly OR 3 Anthias, Lyretails seem like a good choice
Pearly Jawfish
Green Mandarin

The tank has been running over a year but I'm still concerned about the copepod population with the wrasse and 2 'mandarins'. And will having mandarins of different species be fine? Do you think this would be overstocked?

Thanks!

Sorry, I do not do analysis of aggressive fish community tanks. Post your own thread in this forum.

same sex dragonets do not get along. The tank size is marginal for two dragonets especially given your other copepod eaters so I would not do that. The other fish present no behavioral problems but I would suggest carberryi or resplendant anthias; remember that anthias do best with multiple feedings per day. Jawfish need tanks that are well suit for them; read up on those issues before going with a jawfish

Thanks!

schooling fish

schooling fish

In an earlier post in this thread, I saw mention of 'Anthias' rally being the only option for schooling fish.
In a 65g tall aquarium, what number of Anthias could I support, and would I still be able maintain other small fish in the same tank?

Due to the social interaction of a harem of anthias, I recommend a 125 gallon tank or larger with length being the most important dimension. In a 65 gallon tank, one would work (knowing that is not what you want). You could look at Apogon Parvulus, but those are delicate shippers and require much more effort to maintain properly.

Okay, thank you! actually the Apogon (if I can acquire) might be better. My initial fish type, I would like to introduce four of the same kind. Those would be small enough for the theme I have in mind for the tank.

36 bowfront additions

36 bowfront additions

Hi Steve,

I have a 36 gallon bowfront, current occupants are A. occellaris pair, C. flavicuada & C. cinctus.

I would like to add an E. bicolor. Would it be ok in the tank with the angel?

Thanks in advance.

I have a diamond watchman goby, if in the future I wanted to add a yellowhead jawfish would it be an issue having two fish that live on/in the sand area? And is a DSB required for a jawfish....I dont mind scratching it off my list if it isnt possible....other params are:
46g bowfront
70lbs of rock
mostly LPS coral
HOB fuge w/ cheato and feather culerpa(sp)
No Sump right now
2-3" sandbed

Current occupants
2x Mocha clowns
1x firefish

CUC: Array of snails, 1 emerald, 2x peppermint and there are some cleaner/feeder shrimp running around in there too.

I am nervous about two Centropyge in this sized tank long term. However E. bicolor should not interact with them except using up available algae. As such I am concerned with three grazers in this sized tank.

Jawfish have certain requirements with respect to substrate, depth of substrate, and rubble/shells used for infrastructure. In this sized tank, I would be concerned about negative interactions but in long tanks, it would be doable.

There is only one angel in the tank C. flavicuada. Would two grazers, be okay in a 36g.

OK thx for the advise, Ill hold off on a jawfish for now, and in the meantime do a lot of research as to their needs.

Sorry, I mistyped. What I meant to say, was that any centropyge species normally does better in a larger tank (50-60 gallon mature tank) and that adding a second grazer may strain the supply of algae, especially in a smaller tank.

I personally find one or more jawfish more interesting than shrimp/goby pairs. But they do require specialized tanks.
