Hi everyone, before I begin here are some details about my tank: Glass 29 Gallon tank, Marineland C-220 canister filter, Coralife 50/50 6 Watt light, 1 Theo heater, 1 JNS VS-1 Aquaria protein skimmer, 2 Koraline nano 425 gph powerheads, 30 lb live rock, 30 lb live sand.

I posted on this thread before I added any livestock and would like to just double check my updated selection.

I currently have 2 Ocellaris clowns, 1 Blue Tuxedo urchin, 1 blue hermit crab, 2 Turbos, 6 Ceriths, 1 Astraea snail and one frag of blue Xenia.

Id like to add the following to the tank over the next few months:

Fish (In order of how I would introduce them)
-1 Wheelers Shrimp Goby or 1 Pink Spotted Watchman Goby
-1 Blue/Green Chromis (I realize 5 fish may push the limits. If so, this would be the fish I am willing to give up)
-1 Dwarf Flame Angel (I realize these are not technically reef safe but I have heard that they aren't too detrimental. Mey depend on the individual)

Inverts (I hope this is not overkill)
-2 Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
-1 Peppermint Shrimp
-1 Tiger Snapping Shrimp (to pair with one of the gobys)
-3 more Cerith snails
-2 Nassarius Snails
-1 Ninja Star Astraea snail

I would like to eventually add a number of corals to the tank so I have tried to take this into account (I will increase the lighting soon).

I would appreciate any help/ suggestions that you may have.

Thank you so much for your help!

Thanks for the input. Any suggestions on which Goby or Blenny would be best for me?

As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons. However, I am always pleased to have you check back for compatibility analysis.

-1 Dwarf Flame Angel (I realize these are not technically reef safe but I have heard that they aren't too detrimental. Mey depend on the individual) dwarf angels are risky for meaty LPS corals primarily

The stocking list is fine but my suggestion would be to do away with the chromis.

Fish Wish List

Fish Wish List

Hi I'm currently cycling my 55 gallon tank but once done I would like to add these fish.

:fish1:FISH LIST :fish1:
A pair of ocellaris clowns
A royal gramma
A neon blue goby
A school of blue green chromis maybe 3 or 4
And 3 yellowtail damsels adding them last so they're not as aggressive

INVERT LIST:
2 skunk shrimp
I would like a hermit crab (any good suggestions)
And a few snails (any good suggestions)

I would love to get a starfish but don't know if I'm over stocked with the fish I have. If I'm not over stocked which starfish would work and look cool amongst all the fish and inverts.

:fish1:FISH LIST :fish1:
A pair of ocellaris clowns
A royal gramma
A neon blue goby
A school of blue green chromis maybe 3 or 4 chromis will reduce their number to one or at most a male/female pair; moreover they have been coming in less than healthy. In any case, chromis are damsels and aggressive by nature.
And 3 yellowtail damsels adding them last so they're not as aggressive adding them last does not change their aggression level, my suggestion is to avoid

INVERT LIST:
2 skunk shrimp
I would like a hermit crab (any good suggestions) hermits kill snails for their shells; snails are more beneficial in the long run
And a few snails (any good suggestions)

I would love to get a starfish but don't know if I'm over stocked with the fish I have. If I'm not over stocked which starfish would work and look cool amongst all the fish and inverts.

starfish are not really fish per se; in your sized tank they will starve to death

But I really like the yellowtail damsels for the striking blue and yellowtail I don't wanna get rid of them. Would you suggest any kind of snails that will stir my sand bed. Far as chromis my husband has 4 and they haven't reduced the same 4 been in there for two years.

your choice. using fish to cycle a tank, by the way, is bad practice.

again, your choice.

Six Line and Peppermint Shrimp

Six Line and Peppermint Shrimp

40 Gallon
60 Lbs Live Rock
2-3" Sandbed
HOB skimmer with in tank overflow.
8 months old
Ammonia, nitrites =0, nitrates usually near zero.
Rocks are pretty much 75% corraline covered.

Will be adding carbon filtration this week and GFO filtration in the next 3 weeks.

Planning on moving to a 20-30 gallon sump by the end of the year and moving the skimmer and anything else that can be moved into it.

Currently
2 - Ocellaris Clownfish
Scooter Blenny
10 red leg crabs
12-15 asst small snails (ceriths/nerites...)
About 6 Nassarius snails
2 turbo snails
about 10-12 mystery baby snails
Cleaner shrimp

I have a few zoo's and small mushrooms with some overkill lighting. Running 5 strips of Panorama Pro LED Module's by Ecoxotic. I will plan on more coals latter. It's a combination of 10k and blue lights

Now I plan on adding a Six line wrasse and a peppermint shrimp. I am sure the shrimp will be OK, but am worried that the wrasse will get aggressive. Or should I expand the cleanup crew?

I alternate between pellets and frozen shrimp for food (no jokes) and all existing tank mates are friendly.

Yes, the sixline will be aggressive and it will also compete with the scooter blenny (actually not a blenny) for copepods.

again, your choice.

I'm not using fish to cycle the tank I'm using the raw shrimp method. I was saying when it's time to get fish I didn't wanna strike the damsels off my list if that clears it up for you. I would never use fish to cycle I'm not mean like some ppl.

You seriously need to research your fish choices.

I do not provide commentary on aggressive fish tanks.

If I may comment; I'll be happy to. Here's the deal:

Too many dwarf angels in same tank will result fighting between cospecifics. Deaths are possible
Eels are predatory and will eat your fish. Ribbon eel beautiful as they are, not recommended for a beginner.
Puffer fish will get quite large and not reef safe. Not recommended for beginner.
Butterfly fish not reef safe and not recommended for beginner unless you have a matured tank of 1years old.

My suggestion is to research your fish compatibilties before making any decisions.

Just so you know, I'm a beginner myself and I don't even have a SW tank up and running yet. I'm still reading and researching in salt aquaria keeping but I do read enough on fish compatibilites, aggressiveness and whether they are reef safe or FOWLR.

This is an expert thread answered by Reef Central Staff only. As mentioned in my PM to you, we would ask that you not answer this thread although we strongly encourage you to answer/participate anywhere else. Reading knowledge and experience are two completely different experience sets. Having heard something or read something is completely different that having experienced it because there are a huge number of variables involved and those variables are rarely if ever defined in reading experiences.

I stupidly purchased a six line wrasse over the weekend because the LFS told me they were reef safe and a good community fish. Then I read your posts snorvich and have decided to return him to the store. Anyway, I was looking for a replacement fish.

Tank Info:

55g Reef Tank

Current Inhabitants:

  • Purple Fire Fish
  • 2 x Black Onyx Snowflake Clowns
  • Cleaner Shrimp
  • Hermit Crabs and Snails
  • Hammer Coral
  • Galaxy Coral
  • Stylophora Coral

Potential Purchases:

  • Potter's Angel
  • McCosker's Fairy Wrasse

Do the Fairy Wrasses act like a six line by darting in and out of the rock work looking for food? I would like that dynamic movement in my tank that the six line would have provided.

Potential Purchases:

  • Potter's Angel one of the more difficult dwarf angels, and not reef safe to meaty LPS
  • McCosker's Fairy Wrasse excellent fish, requires a tank with excellent covers (1/4 inch holes) as they are a prolific jumper.

Flasher wrasses (McCoskers is a flasher wrasse), are very, very active. Actually more so than a sixline.

Is it a given that this angel will bother my LPS corals, or is it one that is labeled as "Reef Safe - With Caution"?

I'm trying to pick out a "show piece fish", but it seems as all the ones I like are not reef safe. All of the Angels and the Butterflys. :(

Thanks!
