Hi Steve,

Many thanks in advance for all of your help! I composed the following fish list based on what you have suggest on other's list. I'm primarily concern about the bioload and overstocking. Below is my tank info along with the fish list adding in the order listed. Just wanted to get your opinion on the matter. Thanks again!

100G DT, 70lbs of rock, DSB, 60G sump, Aquamaxx cone 2 skimmer. LPS heavy.

In tank:
2 Purple Firefishes (just placed in DT last week after 6 weeks of QT, only fishes in the tank. they paired up! hooray!!)

Unfortunately, you will not know if they paired up for about 4-6 months; hope you get lucky with these

Want to add:
2 Bangaii Cardinals tank raised only recommended
1 Royal Gramma
5 Azure Damsels (5 in case they dwindle down, heard they aren't as aggressive as other damsels?) these will limit your going forward position as they are semi-aggressive; while pretty, are they really worth the aggression? Worth spending bioload on?
1 Midas Blenny
2 Black/White Clowns
2 Mandarin or 2 Leopard Wrasse (waaaay down the road) only one of either please
1 Smaller Tang (maybe, if doable)
One of the Ctenochaetus tangs would work

Thanks for the quick response! Noted on the firefish. Definitely tank bred for the Bangaii.

Question about the Azure Damsel. Are they more aggressive with numbers? Or even a single one can cause havoc? The blue & yellow contrast is so pretty! Not to mention they are easy on the wallet.

They are aggressive singly. However they can be kept in a larger tank in groups where they may intimidate passive fish such as firefish or other peaceful fish. They are very inexpensive because they are very common in nature and easy to collect.

Lets give this another shot.

90 gallon tank (48" length)
100lbs live rock
shallow sand bed
swc160 skimmer

2 occelaris clowns
1 leopard wrasse
1 tomini or kole tang
2 Banggai cardinals
1 flame angelfish

1 leopard wrasse add after tank is 9 months old
1 tomini or kole tang either works so your preference would be terrific
2 Banggai cardinals tank bred only
1 flame angelfish

Just restarted my 55g reef tank, all new sand and rock. While the tank is cycling I am trying to plan out my stocking list I know I want 2 True Perc Clowns, I also want some sort of schooling fish probably go with Green Chromis again 3-5, and will be going with a Diamond Gobie, had one before was fun to watch. I am also looking for some suggestion for other fish. Before I took the tank down, I had a huge Maroon Clown, Royal Gramma, Six Line Wrasse, Diamond Gobie, 2 Green Chromis, and a Aptasia Eating File Fish. I am looking for some other suggestions and better colors. Will have SPS

So far I want
2 True Perc Clowns
3-5 Green Chromis
1 Diamond Gobie

Looking for a few more

Was thinking about a Longnose Hawkfish

a huge Maroon Clown, super aggressive, needs about 50 gallons by itself
Royal Gramma, fine
Six Line Wrasse, aggressive, will limit other choices going forward
Diamond Gobie,
2 Green Chromis, and a
Aptasia Eating File Fish.

I am looking for some other suggestions and better colors.

As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons but I am more than willing to reanalyze stocking lists

So far I want
2 True Perc Clowns
3-5 Green Chromis won't school and will winnow down to one or at most two
1 Diamond Gobie

Hey Steve,

I have a 56 gallon Column currently cycling with a 20 gallon CPR Sump / fuge in the stand. Maxspect Razor 20.5'' 10k LED Lighting freshly installed (yay 24 hour internal timer!). It will be getting about a total of 40lbs of live rock (estimated) Here's the list!

Equipment: Skimmer of some sorts and possibly a media reactor

Coral: Only one I have my heart set on is Frogspawn. I'm guessing Zoo's and maybe some leathers? Not sure totally what the Razor can support

Fish:
x1 Clarkii Clown----------------|
x2 Black & White Clownfish-----|
Both the Clarkii and B&Ws are in an existing tank from a friend.
He can't care for the tank anymore and is hoping I can take them
x2 Spotted Cardinal
x3-4 Blue-Green Chromis (we wanted Brown chromis we saw on honeymoon, but haven't been able to find any, don't think available for aquariums)
x1-x2 Firefish
Green Mandarin (guessing 6-9 months down road)
Some sort or Goby of Blenny (or both)
Dusky or Yellow Headed Jawfish
We love the Tomini Tang but know they need to run free in a larger tank.
Possibly a Pygmy of Flameback Angelfish

(Snails, x1 cleaner shrimp, small hermits)

Let me know so I can tell my wife which ones to not set her heart on!

Both the Clarkii and B&Ws are in an existing tank from a friend. long term, two species of clownfish cannot coexist in normal sized tanks once either species develops a female
He can't care for the tank anymore and is hoping I can take them
x2 Spotted Cardinal
x3-4 Blue-Green Chromis (we wanted Brown chromis we saw on honeymoon, but haven't been able to find any, don't think available for aquariums) chromis will reduce their number to one or at most two (male plus female)
x1-x2 Firefish two firefish require a bonded pair; since they are morphologically not able to be sexually differentiated, doing this is difficult at best
Green Mandarin (guessing 6-9 months down road) without significant effort, your tank can probably not sustain a mandarin long term
Some sort or Goby of Blenny (or both)
Dusky or Yellow Headed Jawfish
We love the Tomini Tang but know they need to run free in a larger tank. tangs require long tanks, yours is not long enough for sure
Possibly a Pygmy of Flameback Angelfish

(Snails, x1 cleaner shrimp, small hermits) I would do hermits or snails but not both

Let me know so I can tell my wife which ones to not set her heart on!

starfish for 20gal L tank

starfish for 20gal L tank

My husband and I are new to this hobby and really excited about getting everything up and running. We have a 20gal long tank with live rock and sand. We are going on vacation in two weeks and just want to run the tank and get everything perfect so we can add our corals and fish when we return. I have my heart set on a star fish and I have been doing tons of research on which ones would be compatable. I have read a lot of mixed reviews. We are looking for a starfish that would stay small, doesn't hide all the time, is reef safe, and is preferably a nice coloration. We are thinking about adding a couple shrimp and hope the starfish can help them to keep the tank clean. Any suggestions? We also want to get a pair of the tank bread Ocellaris Clownfish and a few pieces of coral later on.

Unfortunately a pair of clownfish would be really pushing the limits of a 20 gallon tank. As this thread is only about marine fish compatibility, I don't really provide information about anything else. However a starfish would almost certainly starve in that sized tank.

Hi all,

I'm currently cycling a 125g aquarium with 29g sump. Here is my planned fish list:

1 Foxface Lo
1 Hippo Tang
1 Schooling Bannerfish
2 Ocellaris Clownfish (Rose BTA - add concurrently, or does it matter?)
2 Spotted Cardinalfish
2 Wheeler's Shrimp Goby
1 Royal Gramma
1 Firefish
1 1 Green Clown Goby
1 Black Combtooth Blenny
1 Green Mandarin (After my 'fuge explodes with copepods of course)

I have been scouring the forums forever trying to get a list that will be reasonably compatible with both the size of my tank. I'm certain I will gain some insight after this post.

Thank you in advance.

Hi all,

I'm currently cycling a 125g aquarium with 29g sump. Here is my planned fish list:

1 Foxface Lo add last when the tank is more mature
1 Hippo Tang Reef Central's recommendation for this fish is a 240 gallon tank (length is more important than gallonage)
1 Schooling Bannerfish
2 Ocellaris Clownfish (Rose BTA - add concurrently, or does it matter?) while this species of clownfish may associate (the anemone hosts, the clownfish associate) with this species of anemone, they may or may not choose to do so.
2 Spotted Cardinalfish
2 Wheeler's Shrimp Goby unless they are a bonded pair, only one will work
1 Royal Gramma
1 Firefish introduce early on
1 1 Green Clown Goby
1 Black Combtooth Blenny
1 Green Mandarin (After my 'fuge explodes with copepods of course)

I have a 100g 5' long tank with 30g sump. Protein skimmer rated at 200g and lots of flow provided by a mp40 and mp10. Mostly sps tank, a few lps, and zoas. My current stocking list is:
1 Purple Tang, 2 Bartlett's Anthias, 2 Picasso Percula clownfish. My clean up crew consist of snails from reefcleaners, a couple emerald crabs and a sand star.

I was looking for some colorful wrasses that would go good together, and really add some splashes of color to the tank. Or anything else you might think of.

As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons. However, if you are looking at wrasses, consider flasher wrasses. However, the tank would need to be tightly covered for these fish.

Got it! You the man. Its such a privilege to have an expert sharing his experience. Thanks again!

Thank you for the prompt response Steve! I would have thanked you yesterday but I had class.

I know that powder blues are prone to ich and can be aggressive, but would that be a suitable substitute for a hippo tang? I really want that splash of blue - I want fish of every color of the rainbow. :)
