68 gallon with 20 gallon sump:
The 2 Amphiprion ocellaris
A group of flasher wrasses - 1 male, 2 or 3 females (not sure which one species yet, possibly Carpenter's or McCosker's or Filamented) - not sure if my tank size is large enough to allow for me to keep this group
1 Liopropoma rubre (Swissguard basslet)
1 blenny - either Ecsenius bicolor or Ecsenius midas [I would opt for the E. bicolor]

[I think this is doable. Again, flasher wrasses are prolific jumpers]
[All are reef safe (coral safe) but I have heard anecdotal issues with Ecsenius midas nipping on the fins of planktivores which is relevant in your case]

If I chose the Ecsenius bicolor would that work? Or are there the same anecdotal reports re those?

No issues with Ecsenius bicolor if fed properly. If hungry, they can pick at meaty LPS corals.

If I replaced the blenny with one of the less aggressive pseudochromis species, would that be better? I'd consider Pseudochromis springeri, or P. flavivertex in that case.

No, pseudochromis are a greater risk especially with any flasher wrasse with probably P. fridmani being the least risky.

Thank you!

7.5g Pico

7.5g Pico

Hi Steve,

I'm also setting up a 7.5 gal bowfront pico tank (currently without a cover), primarily for corals.

I wanted to add one fish, and maybe a shrimp or two, and this is what I was thinking:
  • 1 Royal Gramma (concerned, because most sites say minimum 30 gallons)
  • 2-3 peppermint shrimp
  • 1 Cleaner shrimp
  • A few snails
  • An emerald mithrax crab

Do you think the gramma would be ok as the only fish in the tank? Or would this be too small for him?

My other option was your recommended possum wrasse.

Thanks!

A possum wrasse is marginal, a gramma loretto needs a larger tank.

Getting my stocking list for my 75g with 100lbs live rock, 20g sump, skimmer, etc ready. Wanted to check the list with everyone.

2x Maroon or Picasso clowns
4x Green Chromis
1x Midas Blenny
1x Royal Gramma
1x Orchid Dottyback (P. Fridmani) [maybe]
1x Flame or Lemonpeel Angel [maybe]
2x Sexy Shrimp [maybe]
1x Quick CUC from Reefcleaners.com 75g with hermits
1x RBTA [way after everything else]

I want to add corals like torches, hammers, etc later on or as my gf calls them "the flappy ones".

The gf likes purple so any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

2x Maroon or Picasso clowns A big difference in that GSM clowns are super aggressive and will want to control about 50 gallons of tank space whereas Picasso are far less aggressive
4x Green Chromis will winnow down to one or at most a pair; moreover, they have not been coming in healthy
1x Midas Blenny will nip at fins of tank mates, especially planktivores
1x Royal Gramma
1x Orchid Dottyback (P. Fridmani) [maybe]
1x Flame or Lemonpeel Angel [maybe]
2x Sexy Shrimp [maybe]
1x Quick CUC from Reefcleaners.com 75g with hermits do not mix snails and hermits as the hermits will kill snails for their shells
1x RBTA [way after everything else]

70 gallon dt and 20 gallon sump, skimmer and carbon and gfo reactors. 3 hydor 1050 gph to push water and about 600 gph from the return on top of that. About 50 lbs of rock in tank.

2-pj cardinals.
1- yellow tang
1-purple fire fish
2- clowns

was thinking of adding:
Flame angle
rbta
and lots of coral.

Opps sorry for the cap letters i am not yelling..lol

1- yellow tang Reef Central's recommendation for tank size for tangs can be found here. We recommend a 100 gallon tank for this tang. By the way, this tang, once established will make it very difficult to add certain other fish.
1-purple fire fish
2- clowns Not all clowns are equal, which species?

was thinking of adding:
Flame angle Not reef safe, especially towards meaty LPS coral
rbta

So my question is what does it mean when a certain fish says reef compatible with caution.

While that question is not really appropriate for this thread, that would depend on who or what is making that assertion. "Reef Compatible" is unclear and not defined, which is why this thread is about Reef Fish Compatibility. "reef compatible with caution" means that fish may be coral safe, but eat other fish, they may be fish safe, but eat some corals, or they may be coral safe but eat invertebrates. And it is not just fish, it could be invertebrates as well. For example, carpet anemones are safe to a degree with corals, but eat fish.

Hi Steve,

I'm thinking about skipping the 28 & going to a standard 40g, how does the list below look?

Randall goby / tiger pistol pair - already have
Helfrichi Firefish pair from DD
Gold Assessor
Possum Wrasse
Pink Streaked Wrasse
Tailspot or Golden Blenny

Would I be able to add anything else & how many more? I'd be looking for peaceful fish that stay around 3 to 4" full grown.

The list for a 40 is fine with some headroom. However, note that you have some jumpers so 1/4 inch mesh is required. How many more depends on what fish.

Fish purchase opinions please

Fish purchase opinions please

Hi I am looking for some feedback on my fish selection before I purchase anything. The tank I have is a 22g high tank. It has been cycling for a few weeks now. So far I have added a trochus snail and a stromb snail that are doing fine.

Proposed additions
1 Yellow watchman goby & pistol shrimp pair
1 Orchid dottyback (pseudochromis fridmani)
1 Clown fish (not sure which one in particular yet)
1 Other blue, green or red fish (no idea which one as this will be my partner's choice)

From the information I have read the fridmani is the least aggressive pseudochromis in this colour. I also like the look of the strawberry dotty back and the black cap gramma if either of these would be better options?
Any suggestions for other colorful fish that would go well with these in my size tank?

1 Yellow watchman goby & pistol shrimp pair
1 Orchid dottyback (pseudochromis fridmani) really needs a 30 gallon tank or larger, but yes, it is the least aggressive dottyback
1 Clown fish (not sure which one in particular yet) makes a huge difference in terms of aggressiveness, but most clownfish need a minimum of 25 gallons especially if housed with other water column fish
1 Other blue, green or red fish (no idea which one as this will be my partner's choice) probably no other other in this sized tank

I have a 210 gallon tank with a diamond goby, pair of black and white clowns, flame angel, coral beauty angel, pair of fire fish gobies, yellow tang, powder blue tank, flame fin tang and a bicolor dottyback. For inverts I have a pair of cleaner shrimp, pair of fire shrimp, emerald crab, strawberry crab and assorted snails and hermits.

So,the question, would I be able to add a pair of yasha gobies and a snapping shrimp?

Also, I have fine sand, would this work for this trio or do they need a courser substrate? Thanks!

The problem is that multiple shrimp gobies do not like each other and will fight. Also, the diamond goby will steal the newly added pistol shrimp (snapping shrimp). Fine sand, however, is no problem.

Hi everyone!
Well I am not really sure where to start except with a little background info. I have never ever owned a saltwater tank in my life. Now saying that i have been into the hobby for about 6+ years on the freshwater side. I currently have a 75g, 50g, and a 10g. I have xome here kinda for some advice on something different... a purchase and your feelings. I recently found a 55g with sump/protein skimmer, powerhead, some rock, live sand, water and light on craigslist for $250 is it worth it? too small? If to small is it worth the purchase and convert the 75g to a saltwater(love my cichlids but need a change)

I have some pictures for reference, and then we can talk stock :) thanks!
