They feed by combing plankton and other organic particles from the water using long setae (feathery hair or bristle-like structures) on the mouthparts. I have only seen them wave their setae to feed so I cannot say if they can capture larger pieces of food. I fed frozen cyclopeeze and nutramar ova.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Thank you very much for the feedback.

I am concerned about the Purple tang being aggressive towards the other small fish in the 125G tank. I want it to be the "centerpiece" and only large fish BUT I was caught off guard from my Kole tang being a jerk to my goby that i don't want that happen again. It is why i was considering the sail-fin instead as I have read they are peaceful(as far as tangs go)

I cannot predict that one is more or less aggressive; it is sort of the luck of the draw

Puffer wise I am leaning towards the Blue Spotted Toby Puffer for the 75G.
And yes i don't plan on having any inverts besides the misc. snails that stay behind from the live rock.

Again would like to thank you for your recommendations especially on the wrasses I think getting some females for the 2 males is a great idea. They are full of personality and are the highlight of the 75G currently.

OK...my son and I have our first 60 gallon tank that is about done cycling. Details below:

1. 60 gallon (48") DT
2. 20 gallon sump with skimmer and refugium (soon to have cheato)
3. 75 lbs of live rock (50 in DT and 25 in sump)

Rock formation give lots of places to hide. Our first two purchases will be a pair of Oscellris Clowns and a small school of chromis. My question is which to get first. I have read a couple of things about chromis:
1. Get them in odd numbers and a minimum of 5
2. Unless there are other "predator" fish in the tank they wont school and may instead gang up on each other.

I had heard the chromis are a good first fish (nice and cheap too), however if the two issues above are true then it may be best to add them after the clowns. Thoughts???

There is nothing magic about the number of chromis (or any other fish) and they will over time reduce their number to one or at most two. In any case, no fish will school in normal sized home aquaria.

No problem with the clownfish; be sure to get two tiny ones since they will be sexually undifferentiated.

Hey guys,

seeking your opinions here..

I've got a 32G - 60 x 45 x 45 CM tank.
Approx. 26 LBS of Premium LR
Tunze 9002 Skimmer & a Canister with Marine Pure large surface area bio balls, LR rubble & Ceramic noodles.
http://www.cermedia.com/marinepure-products.php - Bio balls I use - Highly recommended by several LFS & stores in the US - I'm from Aus.

The tank has been running for approx. 7 weeks now.

I've slowly introduced the following & are all currently happy.

2 x ocellaris clownfish
1 fire goby
2 Cardinals

1 Bubble-tip anemone.

The clowns have been there the longest, only introduced the anomene two nights ago.. they've since started doing the dance and have both hosted the anomene (she let him after he did the spaz shake)

Firstly, have a made right choices?
Secondly, I'm thinking enough fish (although id like a purple fire goby)..what do you think?
Thirdly, should I be lookinginto getting another tank if the clowns breed?
Lastly, (probably not right thread, my apologies if so) - My anomene has moved around from where he first landed, all the way to the other side of tank and now on the sand bad under a rock bridge but has completely opened up (He's massive) .. is that Ok?

I've read they would move a lot to find the ideal spot.. but in such short time?

Thanks in advance all

Firstly, have a made right choices?
Secondly, I'm thinking enough fish (although id like a purple fire goby)..what do you think? I think you are fine where you are; two firefish will not subsist together long term
Thirdly, should I be lookinginto getting another tank if the clowns breed? If you wish to breed and raise clownfish, I strongly suggest the book: Clownfish by Joyce Wilkersen as I cannot begin to tell you the details you will need as part of this thread. At Reef Central, we do have a fish breeding forum where many folks do breed fish including clowns
Lastly, (probably not right thread, my apologies if so) - My anomene has moved around from where he first landed, all the way to the other side of tank and now on the sand bad under a rock bridge but has completely opened up (He's massive) .. is that Ok? they will find where they like it and they do so at their soonest opportunity

I've read they would move a lot to find the ideal spot.. but in such short time? yes, quickly.

Thanks in advance all actually this thread is only answered by Reef Central Staff, in this case, me.

Oh awesome!

Thank you Steve, I will definatley look at the Breeding thread and read the book before I even think about it.. I'm just slightly worried they'll hatch in the tank and causes issues..

Ill steer away from another goby and keep the tank at 5 fish.. just build on corals from here I guess.. (Until I get a bigger tank of course)

Glad with the clown submission, made sure I got one larger than the other to minimise the fighting stage..

Thank you for your quick response and re-assuring me

Uploaded a pic - Let me knowwhat you think! :)

If you have a way to magnify and get a close up view, you will find that you can see the eyes of the babies through the egg sac at about 1 week.

I absolutely LOVE the aquascaping!

Thank you!!

You just put a massive grin on my face.. re-arranged the rocks quite a few times to give the fish lots of play room while minimising how much rock is actually sitting on sandbed..

Very very very happy with your feedback, thank you! (hoping you weren't being sarcastic, aussies are always sarcastic lol)

Starting up my new reef tank. 40B with 20 gallon sump. 60 lbs of live rock, 60 lbs of live sand. Definites on the list will be:

2x ocellaris clownfish and 1x BTA
1x YWG or similar with pistol shrimp

Now what else can I add to that list that will leave a happy tank? I'm definitely interested in a six-line wrasse and firefish. Any other ideas? Blue green chromis? I'm hoping to have 6-8 fish total. Though I'm sure 8 is on the verge of too many.

Hey Steve, just a quick one, my anomene has now moved up and sort of hung upside down on the rock but has closed up.. like fully and sort of bubbled up.. like just a ball and only few tips hanging out.. should I be worried?

Thank you! ill post a thread question but thought id ask yourself here incase you don't comment on the thread..

While I have spent a lot of time in Australia, I never picked up that habit. Sydney is one of my favorite places in the world.

A sixline wrasse is undesirable due to its aggressiveness; look at pygmy wrasses instead. A firefish would be great

While I know a lot about fish, I know very little about anemones so I cannot really help in this regard. By the way, thanks for the friend request, but I turned it down because I have been forced to turn off private messaging to all except friends (due to my work in the fish diseases forum). But it is nothing at all about you. If I get back down to Oz, I will take you out for a beer.

90 Gallon Upgrade

90 Gallon Upgrade

Hi All:

I recently upgraded my 55 to a 90 when moving to a new apartment and wanted everyone's thoughts on my proposed stock list. Its a full reef tank with ~120 lbs of live rock and 1-1.5 inches of sand and a 30 gallon sump with a built in refugium. I had the 55 set up for around 4 years prior to the upgrade and sold off most of the coral that I grew in exchange for the bigger tank

Currently Have:
2 False Percs
4 Blue/Green Chromis
1 Lawnmower Blennie

Proposed Full List
2 False Percs
6-8 Blue Green Chromis
1 Lawnmower Blennie
2 Diamond Gobies (Mated Pair)
1 Coral Beauty or Flame Angel
1 Yellow Tang
1 Sixline Wrasse
1 Red/Green Mandarin (Future - Pods are settled and multiplying ... need to inhabit the new rock thats only 2 months old.. Probably 4-6 months out)

I planning on buying the tang and angel small. The diamond gobies will be bought so they are equal in size to the blennie which should prevent any fights from what i have experienced in the past.

Since setting up the tank a few months ago, I have seeded several types of copepods and amphipods (month ago) and recently purchased some more cleaners (ceriths, nassarius, nerites, trochus) a week ago.

6-8 Blue Green Chromis Over time will become one or at most two
1 Lawnmower Blennie
2 Diamond Gobies (Mated Pair) IF you can find a mated pair, that will work, otherwise only one
1 Coral Beauty or Flame Angel
1 Yellow Tang needs a larger tank especially with other algae eaters
1 Sixline Wrasse as a copepod eater, will preclude a mandarin
1 Red/Green Mandarin (Future - Pods are settled and multiplying ... need to inhabit the new rock thats only 2 months old.. Probably 4-6 months out) make that 9 months, but no sixline

Are there any other fish that I could have a small school of in a 90 as opposed to the blue/green chromis? Was looking to have a school of ~6 of something.

Coral Beauty and a Kole Tang in a 90G folwr for a little less than a yr now
I'd like 2 or 3 more fish - considering adding a puffer, a lionfish, another Angel, or another Tang
which, if any of these could co-exist?

Unfortunately no fish will "school" in home aquaria except for large ones. Getting fish to shoal also requires a larger tank. Sorry.

adding another algae grazing fish would not be a good idea. Adding a lionfish would mean you have fewer fish. Most puffers will not work in this sized tank. Which puffer were you considering?
