Please do not attempt to buy or sell for 90 days! Important!

Because RC is a prime target of scam artists who would dearly love to rip off customers or sellers (both) RC has a rule that you must be a member for 90 days, and you must be an active participant on the boards (50 posts other than gee! Pretty!) during that time before you can even SEE the sales forums, let alone post there. This is not a whim of RC: if we threw the gates open, you'd find the boards unusable with the sheer volume of what hammers at our gates daily.

So be aware there WILL be sales forums for equipment and livestock---BUT please do not attempt to buy and sell before you qualify, and never post a Want To Buy or any such anywhere BUT those forums. Thanks! Your mods appreciate your cooperation.

I meant more buying side particularly. Local LFS around here don't have the best selection of corals

Joining a local club will put you in touch with locals who probably DO have equipment, tanks, fish, corals, rock and all sorts of things: what you arrange at a club meeting is not a problem: just don't post it or ask about it on RC except in the trading forums (which of course you can't see until you're qualified to see them.) And even when you can, dear friends, no, you can't sell your '49 Ford or used camera on them--- lol! They'll be strictly for fish stuff.

Call your lfs and ask if there's a club, or look on our ample club listings. They're a good way to save money, and a really good place to find somebody who might have a spare pump or 10 lbs of salt in an emergency, not to mention mutual tank-sitting and a live body or two when you need to get a 200 gallon tank out of your truck. RC doesn't list ALL clubs, just those that have applied to be listed, so don't conclude there isn't one: just ask your lfs, look at their bulletin board, and if you don't have a local one, consider starting one, based around your lfs. Any lfs is going to know the value of an organized group centered around its store, and some will even open after hours for monthly club meetings: they really don't mind a concentrated group of people interested in fish.

+10 for what Sk8r said about local clubs. And if you don't have one, consider starting one. We didn't have one here in SW Florida until 2008 and now we have 130+ members, a great website, great monthly meetings and an active buy/sell/trade community that helps everybody.

+1 to Sk8rs recommendation on local clubs and the value they provide.

Buying online in forums can be risky and be smart about things. Once you are able to reach out to the buying forums, just make sure that you provide feedback and read feedback on individuals you deal with. Before doing any transaction on RC I always search the feedback section to see the sellers history and also search for other threads that seller has had open in the selling forum.

Unfortunately...Everyone cannot be trusted:(

Even as much as we try to make it that way.
Things to look for, particularly with fish or corals: photos that have been 'helped' with photoshop and deals too good to be true. Do check the vendor feedback files, so that if someone has been iffy---you'll know.

Good to know I've been searching and searching thinking "Surely they have a classifieds section of some sorts", but never found it.

While I love that you do this (Wish my Archery forums would do this), it's a bummer I have to wait 90 days. :( I wish it was more off post count since a lot of scammers won't put in the time to even put up 50 posts, but I totally understand.

You may have it and I can't see it yet, but two things I've found really helpful on my other forums is the user feedback feature and a thread on blacklisted sellers (usually if they get away with it once they'll try again). If you don't have those than I'd recommend it and if you do I guess I'll find out in 90 days.

We do have it. And really bad behavior will get a person booted right off RC. We don't let them change their name and come back, either.

I would also urge others to report any odd behavior you may notice in the selling forums once you are able to use them. This can be done by clicking the triangle with exclamation mark inside of it. The mod will be notified and you can enter a brief explanation of why that posts seems to not be legitimate. I know I've done it a couple times and the listing has been pulled and although I was not falling for it did not want anyone else in the RC community to get taken:(

unfortunate theres even scam artists members. if they are scamming people they should be dumped from the site. i know and understand they can just make a new name and email. but if repeated members are seen and caught scamming, is there any action following other than removing their post. i was and still have been fortunate with the marketplace on my local reef marketplace forums. i practically got everything from it, also sold a few things for friends. was able to do this the day i joined the website also. to bad the scam-bags ruin it for the rest of us new to the hobby

Absolutely, and this can really be said for any posts on here. Don't be afraid of that report feature. There are really only a handful of us mods so obviously there isn't any way we can look at each and every post. We rely an incredible amount on you guys to let us know when a situation doesn't feel right. Reports are completely confidential so absolutely nobody other than us Mods ever know you've reported something. And if you do report something and time goes on and it seems nothing was done with the post don't think its being ignored. Depending on the nature of the offense sometimes we just need time to do our own independent fact checking.

Good info on here! Could have been handy before I got my first warning. That was when I was new and did not know but I do not mind participating on here everyone is extremely helpful. In it for the long haul!

Yep, we prefer to issue just a warning: it's just a record for all the mods that somebody's been advised about it, usually a newbie, sometimes just somebody having a moment. Think of it as really a courtesy to the user. It goes away without a trace after a number of days. An infraction's something else altogether.
