my brand new Crowned Pearlscaled butterflyfish has its right gill fin rotting, also directly behind the gill there is a cut. Should I do a fresh water dip, or should i go to the lfs and get some kind of medicin? Also im not 100% sure its rot buy everytime I go down there the fin gets smaller and smaller. or should i just let it heal on its own?
Thank you for any help

Drew, FW dips are for parasites, not bacterial infections. What are the water parameters? Are you doing regular water changes? You can QT the fish & treat w/Melafix. Melafix shouldn't hurt anything in your main tank but will make your skimmer go crazy. You really need to find out why your fish is doing poorly though. A healthy tank has healthy fish. Did you QT before adding to your main tank? Is soneone picking on him?

no melafix. Its no good. Theres an article flying around but i cant find it.

Maracyn 2 for saltwater will cure your fish!!

Double the doses!!

10 gall QT - 2 tabs first day 1 tab each additional day

It will save its life

Can't believe every article you read. I go by folk's practical experience. Been using it for close to 10 years now & I swear by it for light bacterial problems, healing torn fish & scarring & for cloudy eye. Not the cure-all & certainly need something stronger (you can use along w/Melafix) for bad infections & pop-eye. I buy it by the gallon pond size!

Being new to the reef-scene (3 years), I'm not sure what Maracyn & other antibiotics will have on corals. Always best to QT if you're using meds.

Garlic boosts the fish's immune system to help fight off infection.
I'd try that before using chemicals.

What's it eating? Can you get it food soaked in garlic?

Are you feeding your fish with Rod's food? It is full of garlic and chock full of vitamins. It is practically a cure for alzheimers. As a matter of fact, since feeding Rods food, my fish have never forgotten to eat.

problem

The problem is it did not get sick in my tank, and i have only had it three days and I noticed it friday when I bought it after I had added it to my tank, it didnt seem bad at all it was barely noticeable other than a little white spec. it wouldnt eat anything in my tank excetp algae and now today I cant even find it.
Thanks for all the help
