Plumbing Supplies

Where do you get your parts from? I fin myself spending a ton of time at Lowes and Home Depot piecing together my plumbing only to leave empty handed or buying a bunch of adaption pieces to get to the correct width/fitting required. I can usually achieve my goal after playing around with the parts, but the setup never as simple and clean as I would like.

Sounds like the way I do it. I'm probably close to $100 deep on my new tank. Ball valves, unions, gate valves...those SOBs add up. I've resigned myself to pushing a cart in there. Two hands or a basket just aren't enough.

I will say I find them cheaper than online reef oriented vendors. Perhaps plumbing sites would be cheaper, but I always need to piece it all together in front of myself to get it right.

A plumbers secret is they have a truck full of every part they might ever need and a bag full of the most common fittings. I've found street fittings, short sections of pipe used like fittings, as well as "trap adapter" fittings useful. As per keeping things clean, KISS (keep it simple stupid) is always good design philosophy. The largest longest straightest runs and fewest fitting is always best.

I'm the same exact way. My last trip in there I brought a Mag 18, a reactor and a mj1200 in with me and set up shop. I always seem to get to about 90% and can never seem to be able to complete it without buying about 3 adaption pieces to make it come together. I look at threads with some superb looking plumbing and I never see all of the misc adaption pieces, in their pictures, that I seem to always need.

yup and it does not help any that a lot of aquarium things that are made over seas are uncommon metric sizes!!!! Ive been in the same boat when i do things. I know TRS has plumbing supplies on hand, from personal experience

it's a bad feeling when a big box doesn't have the item you need- especially when it's late on a Sunday afternoon!

In Rochester, Black's Hardware (Ridge Road East, Irondequoit) usually has those hard-to-find specialty plumbing parts.
Several of our Rochester LFS's have plumbing parts for sale on their shelves: ABC Fairport, CF and TRS. I think MO has some plumbing parts available too, but you'll probably have to ask John.

tips:
*sometimes RO water filters (carbon block, sediment) are cheaper at a LFS than Home Depot
*ABC Fairport has good quality float valves in stock
*keep spare plumbing parts handy because as soon as you throw them out you'll need them :spin3:

I think G at ABC has a bunch of plumbing stuff and enough knowledge to make things work make a fast drawing of what your trying to accomplish go see him and I am sure he can hook you up

If you're reading this in Buffalo, ERB is a pretty big plumbing supply store. Just remember to bring your plaid flanel shirt and your oldest, dirtiest baseball hat so you don't feel out of place :)
