Pooky's 300

I think the key is that the inhabitants need some amount of phosphorous but the $64K question is "œWhat is the minimum (or optimal) requirement?" Assuming that what is not consumed and used would be excremented into the tank. While we are all guessing based on each individual tank and its mix of inhabitants, it's shocking to see how high the percentage above sea water is for some of the foods.

phosphorous is a direct link to nutrition. That why you see more in pellets and flake foods.... they are packed with nutrition, there designed that way. The down side is the with that nutrition come phosphorous. It really a delicate balance. I prefer to feed more frozon foods for that reason, also keeping angels I'm able to feed more and more often.... "keeping them form nipping as much".

Yeah, no kidding...some of those big boys are bigger than a grain of rice. Sometimes my wrasses have a hard time choaking them down. Maybe on a roll like the masago sushi.

Bigger than a grain of rice? That's it? The emp swallows the Hikari jumbo mysis that are about 1/2"+ curled up. One time, I saw one of the tiny Apogons try to swallow one and it was barely bigger than the mysis :lmao: Then the big emp turned around and the lil' cardinal dropped the mysis and scooted out of sight before being swallowed whole.

I have fed mysis before and did see a huge jump in phosphates when I fed it, so I stopped.

My feeding of spectrum pellets are great for me. Minimal phosphates and my fish love them, and getting fat from them.

Leo, I think rinsing the PE mysis is key. I have fed Spectrum in the past, but my po4 was also high back then. That's when I stopped the spectrum. All foods have po4, its up to us to export them out of our systems one way or another. With the way your corals look, who cares about our jargon:thumbsup:

Haha, Mark, looks like we have opposite experience. But you are absolutely right that I should have rinsed the PE. But compared to automatic feeding of Spectrum pellets, I have to side with automatic. Someone should invent a machine that keeps mysis cold then automatically rinse and feed the fish. I'm such a dreamer!

Well....Steve Weast has an automated refridgerated feeder for his articpods so maybe we are not that far off :p

Well, after another back breaking 120 gallon water change yesterday, I think I've got about 90% of the accessible sand out of the tank. I actually like the bare bottom look if it wasn't so "unnatural". It sure is a lot easier to clean. One more medium water change should do it for me.

With the sand gone from the front and the tank cleaned, here is the "SEMI" blank canvas that I get to work with from now on. Let's see where this thing takes us from 2010 going forward :)

I hear you on the bb Kenny. The tank looks better than most even at what you have been through

Wow 120 G's momma! Congrats Kenny, hope that the worse is behind and that better days are ahead

Mark, you are being WAY too nice. I'll be honest with you. I personally think the tank looks like crap :o It needs a whole lot of work before it can be elevated out of the pit of shame.
