Possessed Sohal Tang!

I have a 320gal tank (6ftx3ftx28") with:

- Yellow Tang 3"
- Blue Tang with yellow belly 4"
- Sohal Tang 4"
- Potters Angel 3"
- Flame Angel 3"
- Flame Hawkfish 2"
- Golden Midas 3".

I added the Sohal + Blue + Flame Angel 3 days ago. Since I got him and the Sohal would not give it a rest, he is terrorizing everything in the tank, especially the blue tang.

Its like he is possessed or something. He zaps lightening fast from one end of the tank to the other to chase and terrorize my fish. I think he enjoys it too.

I introduced him last, I changed the rock works, I made two islands with plenty of hiding spaces and I have been over feeding and always keeping nori on clips.

What else can I do to make him stop? he is really stressing out my tank and myself! the blue already has a small cut to the side..

IMO 6ft tank is too small for a sohal. They are extremely aggressive fish that require lots of swimming room. your best bet is to remove it and see if you can return it.

Sohals are best left in the ocean IMO. You might be ok if it was the only tang but even then probably not.

If they are all crazy like this, I see why. This is my first Sohal and I was hyped to get him because it was my first "premium" tang. Not the bread and butter ones you see in every store.

I feel like flushing him down the toilet :)

This is the BIGGEST tank I can fit in my basement. I was barely able to turn corners with 6ft :(

Well don't fault the fish for displaying it's true nature, just rehome him, and yes this is pretty common, even in that size tank.

It will be hard to catch this guy. How about any tricks to calm him down? would putting a mirror on one side help? any type of food?

Buy a fish trap and done. Never fails, I can get any fish out of my 360 gallon tank with a trap and food. He won't calm down. I added an achillies, powder brown and white cheek all at the same time. I had to get rid of the brown because the white cheek and achillies bullied it. Now the white cheek and achillies are going at it with the brown gone. White cheek is going to a new home.

I'd rehome it as well. My friend had one in a 700 gallon aquarium and that wasn't even enough space for it to call home. They're SUPER territorial, someone in my area had to rehome one as it took to dive bombing his blue spotted ray and that was in something like a 1,000 gallon system. Fish trap and patience will be your friends as far as getting it out of there.

It seems the AquaMedic Fish Trap is good. I purchased it..hopefully my blue tang will make it until the trap arrives..

That's what they do .... and it's not a surprise ......

They have some of the longest scalpel-like spines of all the tangs and they aren't afraid to use them. A very bellicose fish!

Thanks for the replies. Fish trap is coming sometime next week hopefully. No one sells these AquaMedic traps in Canada I had to get it off ebay. I love you ebay :D

Anyways after I catch him i will place him in the sump until someone takes him. This is really sad because he is such a beautiful specimen. Even ReefCentral has a Sohal as their mascot.

I wonder how do people keep this fish in the hobby...

it is a beautiful fish. read the description of requirements for it on liveaquaria.com. Only real way to keep this fish is with no other tangs and a very large tank. best of luck catching it with the trap.

I thought I would try something until the trap comes to increase the chances of my blue making it.

Yesterday I turned on my 4x 6105 Tunze powerheads at the lowest settings (700GPH vs 3400 which is highest) in addition to my Gyre150. This coupled with my return pump that already produces 3300GPH flow, seems to have calmed things down quite a bit compared to before.

Total GPH is approximately 3300 + 4x700 + 5000 = 11,100GPH :)
