Possible Pathogen Based Acro Necrosis

Actually I rarely add new SPS. I get mine mostly at local frag swaps, which happend 2x a year. So it had been 6 months since I added a new SPS and my problems started within 2 weeks. Still, it might be coincidence.

It also said too, bacterial diseases will usually start to show signs about 2 weeks after a new addition.

That stuff sounds interesting. I googled it but looks like you need a script for it. Wondering if that would work on our nuddis and aefw's. It has an antiparicytic in it.

WOW Kip,
I know you mentioned problems in the system but I had no idea it was this big a issue. I do hope all is well for those who have survived. On another note, I had a issue with my blue torte some time back and ended up tossing two small colonies ( 4" + ) out because I got tired of watching it die. So maybe I cut most of my losses early on. But I contirbuted mine to poor Alk levels then low Ca levels, since I let the Ca reactor do it's job and stablize the tank my issue for the most part have been better. Still some issues on some corals but they seem to be healing on their own, so I will keep my fingers crossed.
I will be watching this thread for more thoughts
Dav

thanks dav.... with yours, glad tweaking the reactor worked out for ya... i wish you continued success

as you know i actively sell/trade frags especially within the local club.... now that i have realized that this is a problem beyond a coupla random new acros not doing well... you've probably noticed that i have quit offering frags pretty much cold turkey. I hope that anything i did trade/sell to people before i identified this as a recurring problem doesnt lead to issues in their systems.

for those wondering about doxy... i think i have a frag candidate for some experimentation... it is an e-corals unknown that i've had for over a year. it was a "healthy" tip that i fragged away from an ill base. the tip has been fine for about 3wks since fragging and now the bottom is showing slow recession. it is housed in the 75g i dedicated to transplanting "healhty tips" and seeing how they do in a different environment.

let the experiments begin

Update on mine. I'm not sure if all the weak corals had already bit the dust due to this but my tank has been recovering. I've been more aggressive on water changes (20% per week) and switched back to TMPro salt from Red Sea Pro. In the last week as soon as I saw signs of browing/rtn, I fragged those sections off my SPS. Noticed last night that the corals were starting to look a little better. I haven't had to snip anything off the last 2 nights.

I noticed the stop in trading for you Kip,
Everyone local knows you would never sell/trade anything knowing it may have a issue. Pest or pathogen etc.
I will continue to watch mine closely , but as for now mine seem to be doing better, I guess a few months will tell the tell.
Be sure to take plenty of pictures of the experiment, We are all very curiuos how this turns out

so is there anything i can do to stop my rtn/stn? I have hade the same problem and yes i picked up alot of stuff from reefermadness and fragfarmmer as well. what is the cure?
Michael

that good sir is going to take some time and patience.... i will say that fragging away the sick bio-mass from your tank will slow it... and i will say that dropping the temp has helped mine

curing... thats where the experimentation with doxy is coming into play... and then, if successful, i will have to repeat the results.

repeating the results... several here have mentioned success with doxy... i may not be able to provide an absolute proof, but maybe there were will be yet another testimony of its effectiveness.

There really isn't, as of right now, a known "cure" for RTN, but there are some things you can do to slow down/stop it that might work. Good water parameters(water changes), cutting, and a treatment of a few antibtiotics that we have discussed have shown to have worked to slow down/stop RTN in the past, but not is guaranteed. It is believed also, once RTN reaches a certain point on a coral, it cannot be saved.

Guys, who are having STN, how packed/crowded are your tanks?

mine... not packed/crowded at all at least not since i rescaped after totm

I’m afraid to put new acropora in my tank now unless I know they are ok.

Good luck

With this going on, I see what your saying. For me, it sounds like an extended qt period and treatment of antibiotics will become part of my qt regime now depending on what other reefers are reporting with their experiments.

minocycline... beyond me... even though there are several abx in the tetracycline class.... in bingman's article he notes a lot of them are useless for this problem

I have not any docycycline, but do have minocycline any ideas on if it may work as an antibiotic dip?
Tetracyclines are a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics
Examples of tetracyclines

* Naturally-occurring
o Tetracycline
o Chlortetracycline
o Oxytetracycline
o Demeclocycline
* Semi-synthetic
o Doxycycline
o Lymecycline
o Meclocycline
o Methacycline
o Minocycline
o Rolitetracycline

MOST likely broad spectrum to cover "vibrio"
Doxy-most commonly used.

Kip

Hopefully you can get this all straightened out....since I last talked to you of my problems (similar to Kips in that I was loosing a lot but mine was literally happening over night I would go to bed and a coral would be white the next morning), my problems have basically come to a halt (knock on wood). As you know anything that I got from you before you are more then welcome to get back when you get things straightened out, I know you have probably heard that a lot but just to throw my hat in the ring as well.

'preciate it jonathon.... i hope your issues stay at a halt and i will knock on some wood for ya too :)

I used 10mg/gal doxycycline for 48hrs in a QT tank. During the treatment keep the tank covered, meaning put a blanket or something over it so it is in darkness, or at least keep it someplace with the light off.

I have only done this in a QT tank. The water will turn very yellow after the treatment this is the doxi breaking down with the light.

i am doing this starting tonite... when i went to pull the ecoral unknown acro frag... i noticed two more with issues that have just recently started... in fact, one recessed a lot since i studied them last nite

20 gal tank, seio 620 powerhead rippling the water, covering the tank to keep the light out, and 2x 100mg doxy caps for 48hrs (doxy capsules opened, contents dissolved in minimal alcohol, outer capsule discarded)

this experiment will be to see how the frags respond to the meds.... if ok, then i will bathe all frags from that 75g as described above, replace into 75g "healthy tip frag tank"... afterwards, we wait and see if recession comes back

thinking about 1x follow-up treatment a day or two after original treatment... thoughts?
