Potassium enthusiasts

Ive done a little reading about the concern for potassium levels and Ive wondered if anyone has tryed hanging a banana in their tank?

I would expect more problems from having a rotten banana in the tank than would be worth any small amount of potassium from the banana. Especially when potassium supplements are readily available.

Not a good plan (IMO).

FWIW, bananas really aren't that high in potassium relative to seawater. A 100 gallon tank would require more than 300 bananas to supply all of the potassium present in the tank.

Hmm, I might just have to ask my old LI friend Eric, aka MonkeyFish, if he likes bananas in his tank :D

It could be just that they are trained, but some of the fish in Phuket love bananas. They'll come up and eat them out of your hand.

If this is actually intended as a serious question :hmm2:, seems to me using a supplement intended for a reef aquarium would give you superior results.

The potassium in bananas is almost all inside the seeds, that you can barely see. Unless you chew the banana well and expose it to HCl acid, it won't help.

Check out www.purebulk.com for good KCl to mix on your own.

Well, if you put a banana in your 180 and, after it is all digested by the monkeyfish, you see the expected rise of potassium from 380.0 to 380.7 ppm, then we'll agree it was a good plan (assuming that was your goal). :)

I put 300 bananas in my tank, and it looks amazing.

The water is a little yellow, however. I might try running some carbon.

Im glad most of you live inside the box. I just hope you stay there.
Well, thinking inside whatever box you favor or outside of it is a good thing. The notion of hanging a rotting bannana in a reef tank doesn't qualify as thinking in any location, imo.
