For the qt I see most people do bare bottom with some PVC pipes. Could I do one with sand and fake plants?

Are these 'sacrificial' fish? What happens with them after tank cycles, you probably don't want a damsel stressing a fish in QT!. You can buy molly's...Their are cheap or add a damsel fish.
Luck...or BSThree weeks ago gave my friend 5 gal. of my water added to his 10 gal. He made the other 5 gal. He brought 2 clowns and said fish were eating as soon he put then in. Today alive and not stressed.....
+1Adding water from an established tank won't do anything to speed cycling. Nitrifying bacteria do not colonize water. They cling to surfaces like rock, sand, and, yes, filter sponges.
Why don't you try it yourself and see for yourself who's BS or luck maybe you learn something.
I am trying to help him, and letting him know that you need to use something that had bacteria in/on it -- perhaps a sponge that has been in the sump of the display tank. If one just using DT water and not the sponge (( or something similar )) there is going to be issues.
