Powder blue tang primer

I had a little one in my small 75 reef for a little over a year and it died from a swim bladder issue... I then did my research and found that this tang needs huge amounts of space to roam... Though beautiful, I won't try another unless I upgrade to a 300 gallon minimum! I believe success is spending many years with these fish before one can say they've been successful... My hippo tang is at least 6 and my flame hawk is at least 10, and many others have been with me many years... PBT needs to much room to be kept for many years in a small system... Small meaning 200 gallons!

This is right after I added my PBT to a new 150-gallon setup, having upgraded from my previous 95 gallon.
He had been in QT for 8 weeks. Eats Spectrum pellets pretty well. We'll see how it goes from here!
I set up the tank especially for tangs. Also with him are: yellow tang, tomini tang, mimic tang.
The powder blue is by far the biggest fish. So, het gets left alone pretty much.

I have had mine for about 6 months. He was about 4 inches when I got him and a little slender but not skinny. Fast forward to today and he is 5-6 inches and fat. I offer nori on a veggie clip twice daily and he eats it along with pellets & frozen foods. The turnover in the display is 40x. I think offering enough food, high flow and excellent water quality is key for these fish. I got him from diver's den and he was healthy when I got him. He is a Maldivian pbt which I heard are more hardy then those collected in other areas.

i recently got a pbt for my 150, i had one in my old 150 5 years ago ( my ex got the tank and i cant get it back) and he ate anything i put in the tank, never any ich, so far the new one i have only grazes on my rock, constantly, eats flake, but wont eat any nori yet, swims by it while the yellow tang eats it, but wont touch it, also wont touch brine so far, but ive only had him for two days, we will see how it goes.

He'll probably learn. Grazing on the rocks is a good sign. Make sure you don't get rid of all of the algae so that he can keep grazing.

ive kept tangs since 04 and they always learn eventualy it seems. this pbt grazes constantly and will do the ( get away from me) dance towards the yellow whenever it gets near it(yellow tried to intimidate the pbt fist day in tank) but basically dosent care a whole lot, just keeps eating algae. ive got a bit of a hair algae issue, but pbt is eating it constantly, along with my snails and my blenny , pbt is a lil thin( was that way when i bought it) but is def grazing and eating garlic flake food. likes to hang out with my gundeon gobys lol

just an update on my pbt, went from only grazing on rocks and flake, to eats everything i put in the tank lol, nori, prime reef, flake, pellets. still really thin tho, but has a fat belly, constantly eats and grazes , no signs of ick, and we r 5 days in.

just another update, 7 days in and no signs of ich, eats everything, like a pig, stomach getting bigger, but still on the thin side, still grazing all the time, yellow tang has accepted the fact that the pbt isnt going anywhere. now pbt has a small tear in its side, most def smacked into a rock, hasnt affected eating or disposition, so im hoping it will heal up ok, they ussually do.

I've tried like 4 already and they all are on the same boat. They usually catch velvet or brook like on the 10 to 12 day of qt and die off. I try to medicate one time but it was too late. Not to scare you but it sounds like you should be fine. I love to have me a PBT and not sure if I'll try one again unless its from DD. Good luck and keep us posted...

just another update, i thk we r into week 3 now, and so far the pbt eats everything i put in like a pig, very big appetite, constantly grazing on my rock and has quickly became the boss of the tank over the yellow tang. it has gone from very thin and sumwhat bony to having a pot belly and is filling out really well, i did notice last nite it had a few tiny white spots on its fins and i was thinking it was ich, but they r gonr this morning and it has shown no signs of rubbing or scratching and still has a big appetite. mayb it was just sum small sand particals or sumthing. pbts need good water quality and multiple small feedings to thrive, so thats what ive been doing and so far it is working, the last one i had i did the same thing with and had great succes, and as far as cleaner shrimp go, i do not believe they are a help to the fish, i have one and my fish have no interest in it, nor does the shrimp lol water quality is the key with tangs as well as stress free enviroment.

forgot to also add that the small wound it had from i guess hitting a rock was healed in about 3 days, so all is well on that.

Hello,
Here's a suggestion regarding pbt or any other fish....
Neon gobies are pretty good at picking parasites and cleaning fish. My fishes approach the neon sometimes for a cleaning. This fish is necessary to keep sensitive fish. That plus water changes, seachem Metronidazole and focus works really great for ich.

neon gobies will not get rid of ich, neither will cleaner shrimp, healthy food, good water quality mixed with stress free enviroment will all do wonders for ur fish, my pbt nor any of my fish have not had ich in 4 years, prob because of reg water changing and a good diet and no stress. i may be the exceprion to the ich rule so far, but im hoping it will continue ich free.
