Powder Blue Tang

I have had mine for several years and at first it was pale and thin like most of them on arrival. It took me about six months to get it in shape. They need alot of swimming space with good to strong current. Some rockwork with caves to swim around and through to give them security. Their diet must be varied with meaty foods and lots of greens. They are very active strong swimmers and stress out easily......here's mine..one of my favorite fish.......

:eek1: Beautiful!! I don't have one but I think they are the most beautiful fish!!

Nami, MyPowder Brown, [Ancanthurus Japonicus] Did this also...I believe Jenkerry's Powder Blue did the same. Cover the sides of your tank until he becomes more comfortable

Also, Did you quarantine? These fish are prone to ich and sometimes amyloodium. I see you had him on hold for 3 weeks which is good but still watch for the dreaded white spots. My powder Brown is still in qt, after ich he has broke out into some other funk that I am working on treating now. Congrats on this fish..we got one in at work and I have been eyeballing him:cool: They are soooooo beautiful!!

Thanks for the feedback BTTRFLYGRL, I'm glad to hear someone else has seen their fish do this before. By covering the tank, do you mean putting up a background?? I have one already on the tank. He just loves to swim up and down, side and side with his reflection, maybe he just loves himself too much!! :) How long did it take for you tang to stop doing this??

I didn't quarantine him, he was at the LFS for roughly 4 1/2 weeks, 3 of which I had him on hold and he was in a tank by himself, with a bare bottom and UV sterilizer being ran on it, honestly that's a better QT than I would've had for him. For the past 2 weeks at the LFS he showed no signs of ich or scratching, and quite honestly never did when I saw him. He eats like a horse and is very active.

What's interesting about this fish, is that he was pale in color at the LFS, but once put in my tank, he color was and still is extremely intense. I attribute this to the extensive rockwork, must have made him much more comfortable.

Once I get my camera, I'll post pics.

Hey guys.
I just added a PBT 4 days ago, he is from a friend's tank, well established.
Anyway, about 5 minutes after I put him in the tank he started eating off the rocks, and nuri from a clip, in the evening he was eating everything from dry to frozen foods!!!

BUT!!!, yesterday, I noticed he is covered with ick!. I mean covered!. He is still eating like a horse!, he is a really fat fish!. he just eats and eats and eats.

the question is:
Do I take him out into a qt or do I let him take on the disease naturally?

as of now he is still covered in ich, but is eating and acting normally.

Taking on the disease naturally means the fish will continue to weaken with each cycle and eventually die..You now need to remove ALL your fish to a qt, treat with either Hyposalinity or copper [I prefer Hypo] and leave your main tank fallow for 4-6 weeks.

I covered the whole bottom half of my tank...looked a little silly;) He did calm down for awhile but I believe some of his problem was the fact that he had ich. He stopped this strange behavior all together when I dropped the salinity

Yeah, I noticed when I got home yesterday, he stopped chasing himself, so luckily, I won't have to cover the whole bottom half. He loves to pick off the LR.

Thanks again for your help/suggestion BTTRFLYGIRL!!

BTTRFLYGRL, that is not possible, it is a reef and I cannot catch him, hugh rockwork...

BUT, I don't understand why remove him?, I have several tangs, all of them got ich at some point but using garlic via food they rode it off.
no chance with this guy?

Well if your not willing to remove your fish and treat them then there is nothing to discuss I guess. Garlic doesn't cure ich so if the spots on your other fish disapeared after using garlic, then it wasn't ich.
Removing the fish IS possible, it may not be something you WANT to do, but many others have done it and are glad they did..heres an ongoing link in the disease forum

4 weeks in quarenting before adding the fish to your display would have prevented this
Do some reading on ich and its life cycle and go from there..here is another link

elekamit in support of BTTRFLYGIRL's resonse, a few years ago I had a yellow tang with black ich in my display tank. I had 90lbs of LR in a 75G with 4 other fish and about a dozen corals. To make a long story short, I was in the same situation you are in, I didn't want to destroy my whole tank just to get rid of this disease, but I did. I left my tank fallow for 6 weeks and it gave me a chance to buy more corals for the display tank. Sure, it sucked having to remove and put all of my LR in rubbermaid containers while I caught the fish, but in the end I was glad I did it.

here is one for you

here is one for you

someone explain this. I got a nice one about 5 months ago. My purple tang beat him silly. I figured he was a gonner. Once in the 300 gallon you can't get anything alive out. Well now he is a happy FAT camper. He was never that fat when I got him and swims around all the time. Here is the catch. I have NEVER seen him eat any food I put in the tank. He picks at rocks and thats it. Still he has gotten fatter and healthy. I don't get it. I will try pellets like some of you have had success with I guess. He will not eat mysis, formula 1 or 3, lifeline, flake or even brine? Yes I do have a UV also.

Mine is actually doing that now, he was eating Nori, flake and mysis like crazy for the first 3 days, now for the past 2 days he's just been constantly picking off the LR. Maybe it's for the variety.
