power filter

If I want to place a few HOB power filters to cycle on a tank that is cycling, what would be the best media to go in these filters to host bio?
These filters come with a filter with a carbon pack inside the screen.

Thanks.

Pretty much anything you put in the HOB will act as a biological filter given time, but if you want to use it for this and this alone some ceramic rings or even some bio balls would be a good choice IMO. If you ever need to clean them all you have to do is dump them in a bucket of tank water, swish them around for 10 seconds or so and then put them back in the filter. Piece of cake.

I use seachem's matrix media. It's basically very porous rubble rock and fits perfectly inside a hob filter. I store a small media bag of it in the back chamber of my biocube, when needed just setup the QT, dump the bag in the HOB, and instantly cycled tank.

Those filters don't really accomodate anything other than the cartridge that comes with them very well. IMO, if you still have the receipt, trade it in for a Hagen Aqua Clear. Much more flexible.
