power outage

Yep .. The state is supposed to be going broke and last energy crisis they had rolling black outs. I'd better keep my generator.

At the beckoning sight of my bta's, I used an inverter to supply power to a couple ph's in the tank. The tank is getting some natural sunlight and all the animals appear normal for the extended dawn like lighting they are getting. As I hear my neighbors cranking up their generators, I can't help but laugh if they knew I was using my Saleen as a power source for my tank. Sometimes I manage to out do even myself. Well, here's to hoping for power by Monday morning, cheers. Oh, if anyone cares to celebrate surviving hurrican Elvis II, we are playing at Mulligans 64 tonight, may as well rock out in someone elses AC : )

We lost power around 6 pm last night and it came back on at about 1 pm today. I used a power inverter(hooked to truck in garage) to run a powerhead in the tank from around 7 am until the power came back on. So far everything is looking ok. The fish all appear normal, some of the corals looks a little rough but think they'll be ok.

power

Our power was out for about 24 hours. Last night I got a battery powered pump and this morning we picked up a generator 5500 watt from costco. they are $579.00 for HONEYWELL 5500 watt. We used it for a few hours before the power came back on but now I have piece of mind.

I will be willing to get anyone in to costco if you do not have a membership and help you get one. The ones at lowes for the same model but troybilt is priced at $699.00. So you save hundred dollars.

Just in case anyone is interested sorry I could not post this sooner.

Costco: (Expletive deleted!)

Collierville's power came back on a couple hours ago. The tank's happy, so it's all good.

Have Gene. Will travel.

We got power back about 1pm today. Was glad to have the 5500w generator last night and today. Expensive, but probably saved my tank, but I am glad to have the piece of mind come the next big summer storm, or ice storm, that I will have something ready to use.

Honestly, I didn't even consider Costco, because a) they open later, like 9:30 AM on Saturdays, and b) I didn't have any internet access. But after I saw your post Norm, it made sense; they would sell generators. I just had never Really looked at them seriously before. Good Point.

Our power has been out for 15 hours- lost all fish-even the inverts-praying that the corals survive until power comes back- if not in the next 3hours-everytng will be lost- 5,000 dollars worth

You lost all Your fish & Inverts? What's toxifying yoru tank?

How Long can tanks go without power?

How Long can tanks go without power?

As I review this past weekend and take Inventory on everyone's emergency plans, here's what I show (of what I know):

Tanks with Generators:
OneReef
crpeck
Dr. Peaches (model for all of us)
Rendos
And now NormanFine & Mako Shark

On the generator bubble:
Sperry
Shirley386

Uninterrupted power supply:
sprerry

Inverters:
MrRyanT
MarineFlake
Turtleman9100 (sounds like?)

Back in 2007, when I originally priced out my latest the tank build, I never consider the UPS or battery back-up, even though I knew there was a Risk.

So….all of this begs the Question:

How Long can (the average) tank go without power? Is there a rule of thumb?
What are the typical animals that don’t fair well in motionless water during Outages?
What is the recovery process once power is restored? (I assume just a water change?)
What alternatives do aquarists have, besides a gene, UPS, Inverters, DC pumps?
What’s the best alternative for most installations? (How expensive is a UPS?)

Almost sounds like WTMRAC meeting fodder.

Buckets and frozen ice bags are your alternatives.

I always keep frozen coke bottles and zip lock bags. This go round I have just used the one bucket from the sump to the tank(repeat) sump to the tank (repeat) over and over again.

Keeps the water circulated and oxygenated.

The more fish in the tank and the warmer the water the quicker the oxygen goes bye, bye. Bye bye oxygen bye by fish, dead fish low oxygen content and the more toxins build up bye bye inverts, toxins continue to rise, corals expel zooanthellae , toxins go higher, bye bye corals.

In the simplified version, but the #1 is heavier bioload, higher temperatures, quicker for all die off!!:(

Marty , I also have a generator and the tanks got hooked up before the fridge or any other appliance...I bought this generator when I set up my 90 gallon and had never taken the plastic off of it until now ...it sure was a comfort to have it ...

well, my battery back-up from my computer(lousy piece of sh----) only lasted for 1.5 hours--- i spent all night( took off from work( serious about my fish) hand oxygenating the water every hour, but to no avail as i drifted to sleep around 2:30 am after power was off at 5pm--all my efforts were futile

i will be ordering a generator and a ups battery back-up system as of next week---but me and my family are still alive and in a home( that's the good part) starting over is hard, but not that bad( this is the second time a power outage of that length has wiped out my tank---but hey, you live and learn( i'm living and i have learned) that's why on the new house we are having built, i'm spending the extra $9200.00( financing--gotta love it) for a propane generator added to the house, but for now the extra back-up and portable generator will come in handy

total loss
6--reef chromis
5 adult brittle stars
at least 50 or more baby brittle stars
2-- engineer gobies
1-- tomato clown
1-- trigger( belonged to turtleman 9100)
25-- hermits
15-20--- snails
1-- brain coral
1-- kenya tree
1-- lg acro species

but all other corals have survive---done three major water changes, and all is back ok

I currently have an APC HT 1000 running my maxijet with Hydor deflector that has been in place for 6 months. It hasn't gotten a good test yet, just a small outage. I wanted to use it on my Korlia 2, but they don't seem reliable on backup. I wish I had dc power heads as they would be very efficient on a large battery.

If I might let my muse wander a little, based on what I saw in my tank, I think fish load and PH has a lot to do with it. I can only imagine that in a tank with no aeration or light the PH would start to sink to a point that the fish and coral just can't survive. I say fish load, based on what he listed and his tag, which says 50 gallon, if they are all larger fish, thats quite a load for a 50 with no water filtration or movement. Fish require water to move across their gills for oxygen, they rely on the 'wind' created by the pumps to assist just like in the ocean with the currents. Anyway, that was kind of what I surmised from observing my own tank though I did notice my tank temp actually dropped to 76 degrees which started to worry me as well. I have some natural sunlight available to the tank if I need it and my fish never showed any signs of stress. The nems in my tank were what provoked me into hooking up the ph's. As it stands the two recently split RBTA's have moved as a result of this foray into the power-free reefing experience. One thing is for sure, this event has proven to me that reef keeping is not for anyone planning on going 'green' anytime soon.
As a note, our power came back on last night just before I had to head out to the gig, roughly 6PM. That was 24 hours, no power. I am thankful I did not lose any stock.

I've had a power outage for something like 8 hours with no problems. I'm pretty curious as to what the difference is between fish in a tank vs fish being shipped in a bag of water. They seem to do pretty well in less than a gallon of water overnight with no light or circulation.

Not trying to start an argument, just wondering what the cause of death would be.

Hmmmmmmm. Good point. Personally, I loss nothing, nor did I panic and make hasty decisions about my tanks. Some corals, like zoos, companies ship 2 day instead of overnight and they arrive fine.

The biggest difference is that most "decent" shippers of stock use "oxygen pumped into the bag" instead of just ambient air, and during times of warm weather they are shipped in insulated shipping containers and with cool or frozen gel packs. And they do have a percentage of loss. Lower temps and total darkness also cuts down on oxygen conversion as the fish metabolism slows down.

That's a great point, and actually why I asked the question. I don't know.

Anyone else care to venture an opinion?

I was on my way to Memphis to attend my husband's nieces's "Poolside Wedding" at Club Winward in Lakeland. Heading to DD house to get dressed when the sirens begain to wail. I was driving my DH truck and he was about 15 mile behind me in his Prius. I made it to the 14 exit before pulling off the the side of I40. Most every vehicle, including 18 wheelers were either pulled off the the side of at a stop in the right hand lanes. It was a very scary moment, with metal signs flying by the truck. The truck was shaking like crazy due to the wind. Being fearful of being decapitated by a sign coming through my window, I was able to maneuver next to an 18 wheeler, which blocked the wind. I sat there about 10 minutes before the wind and rain let up and proceeded on to DD home. It was a very scary moment!! You have heard of a candlelit wedding, well Kristen and Howard's was, out of necessity. The pool was overflow and it was coming a monsoon, so they had moved the wedding inside and then the power went out. It was so hot in that building. They were able to rent 2 generators from Home Depot. These were hooked up and ran 2 lamps on the bar (very important) and the DJ area as well as some tiny lights on the arch. There was no AC, fans etc. You could not see the wedding cake. We were all totally drenched. The doors had to be kept closed during the cememony due to the noise from the generators and it was stifling. Thank God, after the cememony, the DJ reveed up the music and the doors opened, which provided some much needed relief. Of course the Margarita machine had not power, but hey on the rocks was not bad. I am sure they will look back on this day and laugh and they really did take it in stride, but I would have been having a heart attack if I were the mom of the bride or the bride. I know some of you saw the house on Newcastle Rd with the house on top of it (ch 5 and national news). This was about 4 doors down and across the street from DD. I made lots of pics of it. It was amazing that the people in it were not killed. It was a rental house and I sure hope they had renters insurance. Their truck was smushed in the carport too. All ceilings caved in. They had a big crane to lift the HUGE tree off the house. DD power was on, but DS who lives on the same street, but on the same side of the street as the house on the news and also about 5 doors down from DD, power is still out. The cops came by late this afternoon and told him to get out of his house, get his car out of his drive and the dog out of the backyard, because a neighbor's tree was in danger of falling on his home. He did have some limbs off his trees which were in the road. I know he is glad that he currently has no tanks. I got home tonight and all is well here in Beech Bluff. No power outage or anything. Tanks all well!!
