yes the power outages gave me some heartburn today. Now my new project is getting backup power plan ASAP. go BROWNS

So far so good but two blocks away everyones out in the next town over im sitting patiently praying ......need to put a generator on house ....putting that in the new tank build budget woo hoo...

luckily i live near the wooster hospital and the college of wooster so they are normally fast to get our grid up, but 3 summers ago we were out for 3 days

i might have to cut my trip here short and rush home .

sucks...

I watched the big black out a couple a years ago on TV with the AC on so I usally dont worry. I think some one important from the electric company must live by me :)

Power didn't go out, but the townhouse took a beating:

Left a message for the maintenance dept, and told them they might want to get out here early tomorrow.

A couple yrs ago I lost most of my fish due to power outage. I've since made changes to keep that from ever happening again.
I have a 12v deep cycle car battery hooked to a battery charger that is always charging and is designed to constantly run with load (Samlex 1215A). Then I have an inverter hooked up to the battery, with my main pump (and backup heater) plugged into it. So my main circulation pump is always running that way.
If power goes out, the battery takes over instantly. Been running with this setup for 3 years now. Last year I actually had it run my main pump for 18 hours with no problem.

Before this setup, I tried using various computer UPS backups. Started with the cheaper ones, which didn't work very well. Even tried some top of the line ones that I got from work (true sine wave ones), but even those only ran for a couple hours max. Eventually I'd love to get one of the whole house backup generators.....but don't have the $$ at the moment.

If anyone else is interested, I'd be glad to provide details on all the equipment. Setup seems to work pretty good for me and wasn't too expensive.

Also if anyone has one of those whole house generators, I'd really like to check it out and get more info.

I just heard on the news they said it could be up to a few days for areas that lost power. :eek2:

The power company is short handed, because they sent extra workers down to assist with the hurricane efforts.

Yea i just read somewhere that said there looking at it being up to 7 days at the moment till they have fully assessed the damage.

ok i need some info on the backup generators that runs on Natural gas. i contacted my electrician who is going to give me a quote. i have seen quiet a few of these at home depot recently. i might check into those too. In the mean time a DIY job needs to be done ASAP

i can see fish dying after a few days but a day without power, is it that much of an impact? how do they get shipped without dieing?

Since there is more than just fish in a tank, microfauna, bacteria, corals, etc. there is a higher oxygen demand than a single fish. I have outages that lasted a day without loss of life. Survival depends on a couple factors. Temps can come into play. Fortunately, given the time of year, it shouldn't be too bad. However, if power is going to be down a while, I still would wrap the tank in a thick blanket.

Second is lack of 02. You can greatly increase their chances by frequently stirring the tank. Also, a battery operated air pump(s) also are a nice cheap $10 gadget to have around. The bigger the tank, the more I would get.

Well here's what happened over night. Down the street a lot of trees were snapped in half, and all over the street, but all the power seemed to be on.

I'd love to see what you've got set up.

Thanks!

Ya im not sure how our stayed on, I was preparing everything expecting it to go off heh. I guess living in the city paid off this time, but it normally at least flickers when things get that bad.

I'll get some pics this week and post them.

The time I lost my fish was when the power went out here a few years ago in August. It was out something like 3 days at my house. Sure I could have stirred the tank, did some water changes, or found some way to get O2 into water.....but as luck would have it, that just happened to be the same time I as down in Florida for my usual yearly family vacation. So my poor tank was on its own :(

Mattyice, I'd like the generator contact number please. Can't afford one at the moment. But would be great to have a contact number...so I can get some quotes when I'm ready. As Vivek mentioned, Natural Gas would be my choice of power too. Thx.
