ok i have a 55 gallon with a dsb and some live rock and i was just wondering what size powerhead i should get for it?
and how should i position it because i dont want to stir up the sand into the water.

my lfs only has the maxi-jets. so thats what im getting but how do you figure up what size to get?

im going monday to get it so i could use a quick response. which im sure i can get here :)

thanks ahead of time.

my tanks finally coming together.

oh yea one more question. i have a false percula and a true percula and they are staying together so i think my lfs owner was right. but im going to ask to make sure. i couldnt find no info so can my true perc and my false perc breed? they stay together like they will but i wanna know from you guys.

thanks again

Those clown can indeed form pairs, so they'll probably stay together.

I would guess you'll want 2-3 Maxi-Jet 900s or so for that tank. I use 600s and a 900 for 29g tanks. A Seio might be another option to consider.

I went with two Seio 820's in my tank, I wanted to do Tunzee, But that would of been way to much for my tank, So I went with the Seio's. I'm waiting for them to arrive in the mail from Marine Depot, so that I can add them to my tank.

ok so probably 2 900s will do but what would be the best way to position them?

i dont like dealing with delivery times and shipping fees so its easier to go to my lfs and they have some decent prices so its not to bad. as long as it works im not worried about the name and i have very limited funds so the maxijets will have to do for awhile.

thanks

all i had in my 55g was 1 maxi jet 900 & every thing went well, i up graded to a 75g & went with a seio 820 sounds funny but its stronger than the 900, the 900 doesnt mean you get 900 gph but the 820 does, some one tell me if that is right, thats how i under stood it, when i ask

thats right the Seio 820 does give 820gph I'm not sure on those maxi-jets... But I'm sure I'll be happy with my Seio's for my tank. Check out my little red house for my new picture of tank that I just posted, I just recieved 40lbs of LR saturday, So the tank is really comeing along.

i have a 55 gallon and run maxijet 1200 and 2 600's, i have about 2" sand bed and i am thinking of converting 600's to 1200's currently i run the 1200 across the top diagonally and 600 and the lower straight across the back and the other 600 in the middle straight across the front, creates good random flow but i would like it a bit faster. i would suggest 1200 and 2 900's IMO

one more thing though. do i need to leave them on constantly or a timer to turn them off? if i need to turn them off then how often and for how long?

I currently have 2 MJ900's in my tank along with an older Penguin 550. Not sure what the Penguin is putting out, but I know the MJ900's each do 230 GPH. Mine are each in the back corners facing the front middle, stagered at different heights, with the Penguin facing the back of my LR.

All of my powerheads run 24-7, and I think for starting you should be fine. But in time as my reef ages I may upgrade to a timer to create a more life like current system.

go with at least 2 or 3 maxijet 1200's the better the turn over rate, the less algae, and better enviroment. Remember we are trying to recreate the ocean here, the stronger the better.

penguin 1140 does 350gph. petsmart for $29.99 i used 3 PH in cross fire one higher than the other, from left to right. one in the middle hit between the two. ocean effect if placed correctly and no expensive wave mach. or timers. if you place an air stone in the flow it helps you see flow better till you get it the way you like it.
REEF-ON!!!

i run a seio 820 and 2 small aquaclears near the bottom behihnd the rocks, had a couple dead spots, probably upgrade to another 820 because the aq's are hard to hide!

I have 4 maxi 900's on my 55 gal. Two positioned high on left and right front. Two positioned lower left and right back. (mount the lower heads upside down to reduce sand intake). Pumps are on a wavemaker alternating betwwen left and right pumps. Tank is very happy.

I use a Max Jet 1200 and 900 in my 54g corner reef. Plus my return from my sump. The more flow the better in my opinion, just as long as your not blowing stuff down in your tank. This will help keep the sand bed clean also.
