Powerheads

OK. I am officially sick of maxijet mods. I never want to own another. I love the flow but hate replacing them all the time. I don;t like my korialia 4's because they are big, ugly and don't have near the flow as the maxi jets. I don;t have tunze or vortechs money so, what do I do? My tank is 6 ft long and I have several sps frags, as well as softies. What can I do for flow? Please help.

Well not much else to do, the other alternative although a bit late would have been a closed loop although may be more expensive that a tunze or vortech.

Yeah. I plan on doing CL on my next tank. Right now I am stuck with powerheads. I wish there were more options.

buy SEA-FLOW maxi mods they are the best hands down, and I've had them all-algea free, sure flow, eco-mod, etc, and they are all junk they make noise fall apart and the flow dies after two feet, but the sea-flows move water the full length of your tank. they have a review on this site check the homepage.

Tunze nano's 6025's for like $70, small, and w/ mods push about 1,100gph on 7w.

That's about the same as koralia 4's, right?

How about using the Hydor flo, something like this?



More info in the Gallery page for that shot, but I do run Penguin powerheads if you're looking for a recommendation.

If you'd like to avoid powerheads altogether, imagine a barbed Tee fitting in place of my powerhead - plumb one or several (they run on anything between 80-300gph each) into your return line this way. They fit 1" vinyl hosing perfectly (see photo detail), so it'd be easy to put them just where you need them in the tank.

At only $9.99 each, I've gotten 3 of them running in my tank - they're not expensive to experiment with.

In theory, one Penguin 1140 (conservatively rated at 300+gph @ only 11 watts) could run up to 4 of these if a lower, but well placed, flow rate would be desireable, or just one flo if you're looking for stronger turbulence out of it.

OK. I am thinking about Tunze stream. These are way out of my budget but, I might bite the bullet. My tank is a 135. Its 6 ft long. Is there a way I can get away with 1 stream and 2 korilias 4's for complete flow? If so, which model tunze and how should I place in the tank?

If I were to pump some $$ in that area, I'd go w/ the 6055 nano's w/ a controller.
Much less invasive, and great random flow.
Streams are great, but kinda big.

OK. This is what I did. I modded my 2 Koralia 4. Awesome flow. I am running these on the back wall. I then purchased 2 Koralia 3. I am running those in the front corners. I then unmodded 2 of my maxijet 1200 and was able to mount these behind rockwork. No dead spots at all. I am ok with the setup. I plan on upgrading tanks in a while so, I am looking at CL next time instead of powerheads.

While high flow has been the call for sps, I've been seeing alot more success w/ random flow more than just blasting.
On upgrade w/ loop, I'd look at OM's.
I thought loop alone would do it on my first 180g, but found it diff to aim so no dead spots, and ended up adding tunze nano's.
My new 180g is better setup, so no PH's

check out the new prop pumps from seio 1000 gph much smaller than the old models. just change K4 to them, as they have ceramic shaft not metal and I like the strong mag. mount
