Prazipro and urchin ?

Everyone,

I currently have a red tuxedo and a collector Halloween pincushion urchin in QT. They will remain there until the 72 period to make sure they are not carrying crypto.

Quick question...

Can they handle a 2 round prophylactic Prazipro treatment before I place them in my DT? I know they are sensitive creatures and just want to make sure they can handle the treatment. I already lost one tuxedo from LA/DD due to shipping stress, so I am just playing it cautious.

I had heard/read that urchins can carry various pathogens and diseases. I quarantine all new livestock with the start of TTM, followed by 6-8 weeks of observation, with the addition of Prazipro during that time frame. I have had great success thus far, and would like to do a 2 round Prazipro treatment for prophylactic purposes only.

The urchins appear to be doing fine, and I am just being cautious as to try and prevent any diseases from getting into my DT.

The parasites that Prazipro treats (monogenean trematodes, aka flukes) require a fish host. If you are QTing the urchins for 72 days, that is more than enough time for any flukes in the tank to die off. So, no need to dose Prazipro or perform TTM on inverts. Just place them in the QT for 72 days, then transfer to the DT.

Thanks for the info and help.

Since the urchins didn't fare well in shipping losing a good amount of spines, I was concerned about putting them through the TTM. Hence I opted to get them in my QT right away so they could be in a more stable environment and eating Corraline algae and supplemental nori. That is the reason for the 72 day QT period. I just figured that the Prazipro would be a good addition, but if it's not necessary, then I will opt out.

These are my first urchins so I am just being cautious. Thanks again !!

Nothing wrong with being cautious. :)
