Pro Fish REALLY?

I saw their ad on craigslist and went there today. Holy CRAP, outside looked great and dry goods area when entering looked okay. When you go in where the fish and corals are at its GARBAGE! The little cubes as you enter that generally hold small nano fish or crabs all covered with algae. The tanks that held corals look horrible my girlfriend thought this had to be a closing sale. Or atleast one last marketing scheme before the nail hits the coffin. Their filter sock in the sumps where all over flowed with water leaking out of them. How is this store still opened? Thought the 20% sale was a great idea for an hour drive. I thought they would atleast have a shipment of corals and fish in if they were having such a big sale. I came to the conclusion after seeing everything that they be closing by the end of the year. Staying in SF at my girlfriends and hitting up aquatic central for their sale tomorrow. Hope they come through. Had to rant cause it was really that ridiculous.

I'm surprised you didn't like the hidden gem of reefing in the north bay! :)

That is not an unusual experience there. Last time, and I do mean THE LAST TIME I will ever go in there, they were willing to sell me fish that had ICH! The 'salesperson' said, "No problem, we can sell you the meds to cure it."

the thing i liked about them is that they are open on Sunday. now if they close where will i go shop on sunday when i need something?

They made a conscious decision not to carry Live rock harvested out of the ocean. But instead to try find an alternative that would come close to the biological benefits of the wild live rock. And the "Real Reef" artificial rock has proven to work. Plus there is no introduction of pests like pistol shrimp, gorilla crabs, aptasia, bristle worms and a myriad of other creatures. Remember live rock is called live rock because of what's in it, not what's on it. So it's about it being porous and full of the beneficial bacteria that keeps the reef tank stable. And if this can be accomplished by man made rock all the better for the environment and the hobby. Definitely a sustainable option.
the less taken from the reefs the better. with that man made rock plus LED's and all aqua cultured animals you could have one great Eco friendly reef tank.

Any problems getting a full cycle out of fake rock? I'm still not sold. Plus the calcium real live rock is composed of is also beneficial. Just seems like it would take much longer for the biological filter to become established with fake rock.

James, all of the manmade rock may have surface porosity and mimic the look of live rock but its still a brick as far as internally. Real rock is basically hollow and this is where the benificial bacteria lies. Even old base rock is better than manmade. I dont think the real reef rock is aragonite/calcium based therefore no buffering benefit from the rock either.

I agree there is nothing better than live rock straight from the ocean. But there are tons of issues with the wild harvested rock. Most of the really inexpensive rock that you are seeing has been shipped by boat and has been out of the water for weeks. If it sits at the wholesalers even longer. So by the time the LFS gets it could be out of the water for six weeks or longer.
The "real reef" rock has great buffering capacity it's made from calcium carbonate.
Heres a blurb from the website:
" The end result is a product that offers the hobbyist a user friendly product with the basic building blocks to start a modern Reef or Fish only aquarium. A calcium carbonate based eco-friendly rock seeded with beneficial Nitrifying Bacteria, Micro algae’s and Coralline algae’s with no pests or nuisance algae. It offers great buffer ability and alkalinity, not to mention many trace elements." it's a good sales pitch but you get idea.
But I personally think it's way better than any type of old base rock. It's buffering capacity is far greater than wild live rock.

Well i guess the only thing i don't really like is it just looks fake. I could just add a small piece to my sump to help the cycle more. Then again, i got the topic offhand again :headwally:

I'll never buy anything but dry rock from inland quarrying and Real Reef again. I love the Real Reef stuff, and anything that doesn't bring pests in is good with me.
