Problem with Gold Mauls

In my experience gold mauls rastas fruit loops you need to keep the under subdued lightning and make sure you dont have asternia stars they love zoas for some reason over palys..

Yeah, I was lying in bed the other night thinking about that. The 1/3 ratio just didn't seem right, but I kept telling myself your ok, one out of the three cups used was peroxide. Jackass!

Just out of curiosity, what causes those polyps to look the way they do in my picture after almost 8 months though? (shrink up/spread out) What would be stressing them out? I would love to to nip this in the bud if I can, but all of the other corals in the tank look great. It's just with the Gold Mauls, the Hornets & the Rastas where these situations occur.

More often than not po4 spikes or drops :) provided they're not fresh off the boat which I don't consider to be at 8 mths you should be able to rule out things that don't change like lighting , flow etc. nutrients on the other hand does tend to vary , same cn be said for Alk swings. Why the ? Next to the po4?

While I'm sure some polyps are more forgiving to light than others I keep over 200types of zoanthids under the exact same lighting , all corals are on racks in less than 12" of water and pounded with 80w t5 . It's more of the acclimation to lights or lighting changes , any polyp under the same lighting for a long time will eventually acclimate , but if it's too much to soon they won't make it or stress doing so and melt before they get use to it.

What if none of these things were a problem, then what? Remember everything else looks great, (sps, LPS, softies) it's just the Gold Mauls that are grumpy. I just don't see how an alkalinity swing or a sudden drop or spike in phosphates would only affect one coral & none of the others. I guess it's possible, but unlikely IMO. Thank you for the replies though. :)

Its not that hard to imagine , For the same reason why a colonie would melt and another by its side of the same type may not , it's no different then losing a single head of frogspawn while the others live on and grow , individually some animals just don't take certain conditions as well as others do.

So with your mauls maybe for some reason they are not liking the system for what it is right now , what the change could be who knows really its most likely impossible to pinpoint but isn't far fetched to believe it could be something so small and simple ;)

I guess I'll just chalk it up to a fluke then and stay away from some of these problematic varieties. (unless I can get a polyp for dirt cheap) I've been doing pretty much the same thing each week to this tank for the past 6 years and I'm not about to start tweaking things just to compensate for the loss of a small colony of zoanthids. (as beautiful as they were) :(

Thanks for the replies everyone. :)
