Prodibio BioKit - Will start on Monday evening

I stopped dosing everything once I started the Prodibio. I have been away from the tank for 2 weeks and I return home tonight. The person who has been maintaining my tank, he states that all is well and there is more coraline growth. I will see tomorrow since the light will be off by the time I get home.

Any updates to this?

Question:

I have a 29 gallon tank; just got the Bioptim and BioDigest today; I am going to do a w/c tomorrow and start the product on Friday; from what I understand from the the thread I can dose the full viall of the Digest, as that is the bacteria portion, but should I only dose half of the vial of the Bioptim as the whole vial would be too much since it is rated for 200 liters?

UPDATE. I just got back from a 2 week business trip. There is some brownish algea everywhere in the tank, esp on the back glass. The corals look the same. The powerheads were covered. I did a 30% water change and added the biotim and digest.
What on earth is going on?

I did water test on yesterday and everything was good. zero PH4, ALK=10.6, CA=460, Mg=1200.

The corals grew, but I still have the green stuff covering a lot of the rocks.

I've been using Prodibio for about 2 months now. I was aiming to reduce my nitrates in a mostly softy system, rather than colour up SPS.

Generally it's been a success, i've gone from +25 to <10 nitrates. I never really had an algae problem, other than a little bit of green stuff that would appear on the back glass. This has disappeared now totally.

The general concensus here in the UK seems to be Prodibio works best when used on a 2 week cycle between Biodigest and Bioptim. However rather than dosing both together, it works better if you dose biodigest 1week and bioptim the next. The idea behind this is that it gives the biodigest bacteria time to reach optimum levels before you add the bioptim. Thus you're not risking feeding cyano with the bioptim.

My personal belief is that out of all the systems the vial system for bacteria (biodigest) is the best. You are guaranteeing good bacteria going in. Unlike with zeovit or fauna marin, where the stuff can go off in the fridge.

For the carbon sauce it's a bit more open to debate whether feeding more often than 15days helps. The zeovit/fauna marin systems basically feed the bacteria 2x per week, rather than 1x fortnight.

For coral food i believe the Zeovit/fauna marin systems have a destinct advantage, as i think like most things small amounts of food more often are better than alot of food once per week. Unfortunatly prodibio does not make this easy with the dosed vials of reefbooster.

For me now that my nitrates are down i plan on continuing biodigest and bioptim, and combining in some of the zeovit feeds, specifically sponge power and amino acids. As i want to dose these in very small amounts each day rather than once a week reef booster doses.

Did you notice a difference in growth as before you were using Prodibio?

ok i receiced my bio clean kit and according to the instructions on box i vial of biodigest should work for tanks up to 1000 liters (250 gal) and 1 vial of bioptim for every 200 liters (appx 50 gal)

so i have appx 100 gals of water and from all the posts i've read it seemed like 1 vial of each weekly..........from the instructions it looks like i should dose 1 of biodigest and 2 of bioptim. if anyone has some diff of dosing rate let me know....thanks.

are you going to dose them at the same time?

I am debating whether or not to dose both in the same day or possible wait a day between the two

well i called marine depot and the person i spoke to said to add the entire vial of biodigest and then 2 vials of bioptim (1 per 50 gals) to my system of appx 100gal .

yeah from what I have read you really cannot overdose on the digest as it is the bacteria, but the optim is the food, and too much of that in the tank could foul up the water. Let me know how it goes for you, I will be reporting my findings over the next few months; I ordered 12 vials of each (I only have a 29 gallon tank)

how and how much are you dosing? I am asking because i am having the same issues w/ the algae. I am adding one of each. I am a week behind you when I started.

Maybe the tank was overfed while you were gone??

IMO you'd be better of dosing 1 biodigest, +1 Bioptim, then wait a week and add the other bioptim.

The bioptim is the carbon source for the bacteria, which needs to last the bacteria for 15 days. If you add 2 at once you risk causing other bacteria such as cyano to bloom.

As i said above most people using this in the UK tend to alternate the biodigest/bioptim on a weekly basis.

The two Bioptim's (1 per 50 gallons), is that only on start up or all the time? I've been using Prodibio for about a month and a half or so. I've been dosing 1 vial each of Bioptim and Biodigest each week. I was going to continue to do so until all my microalgeas go away, but that doesn't seem to be happening. I still have a bright green slime type of algea on some of my rockwork. The idea of adding the Bioptim one week and the Biodigest the next makes perfect sense to me. However, I have a 120 gallon tank. Am I supposed to be using 2 vials of the Bioptim? Thanks.

per the instrutions on the box i am going to dose 2 vials of bioptim every week along with the 1 of biodigest for appx 7 weeks and then every other week . at the 7 week period i'll start reef booster on a weekly basis.

i'm kinda following the schedule that another reefer had posted....i believe the idea of dosing every week at the start was to make sure tank had nitrates and phosphates down as far as possible before adding reefbooster. so i ran testkits yesterday prior to starting and will see what happens by week # 7

as of yesterday 5/1/08

ph 8.2
phos 0 salifert
nitrates 10 salifert
calcium 460 salifert
alk 8.7 lamotte
sg 1.028 refractometer
