PSA: Freezer Burnt Food & Anemones

May have caused infection in my magnifica anemone, it's back in my hospital tank after feeding a pea sized amount of LRS Fish Frenzy. The first deflation was the day after being fed, it deflated again 3 days later to confirm infection.

This was the first time I had intentionally fed the mag, I guess the lesson here is if you are going to feed, make sure it's of high quality. I'm kicking myself wishing that I had never fed it now, but maybe my mistake will help someone else.

Thanks Antonio, it seems to be responding to treatment thus far so I'm optimistic, but things can decline at any moment... Should be out of the HT Tuesday with any luck.

Good luck! I feed my nems LRS foods all the time without issue, but I'll be sure to keep an eye on it.

For me, it I don't think I can eat the food, it is not go into my anemone. I do eat some tiny shrimp and tiny fish.

This is really weird and I don't think you can outright blame the food. Freezer burned food is just dehydrated, that's the only difference between it and the normal state. Unless you fed it while the food was still frozen, it doesn't make sense for the food itself to cause an infection. Not to mention, LRS foods are actually some of the highest quality frozen foods available and many research institutions and large breeders use it for that reason. It doesn't contain any preservatives.

Is it possible that something else contributed to the infection?

I'm not blaming LRS foods? It was definitely from being fed the food, why it happened I cannot say for sure; the compartment where I keep the food may not keep it at the right temperature and it's slightly spoiled, whatever the case may be I don't believe in coincidences. It could be that I didn't thaw the food out and the cold stressed it out too much too, I'm sure there are other scenarios, but I don't think it has anything to do with the product Larry provides.

Ok well it seemed that you were blaming the food itself since you said to "make sure the food is high quality" but now I see you strictly meant freezer burnt.

I found that deflating doesn't have to be an indicator of an infection. It can also indicate that some water parameters are off (not necessarily the ones you can easily measure).
My crispa was deflating daily for about 2 Months. After looking into all possible causes I couldn't find anything specific being wrong. So I just did a 50% water change and that fixed the problem in an instant.

The issue I see with food is rather the feeding of large pieces that may start rotting on the inside before being digested. All these anemones normally feed of planktonic organisms, eggs and small crustaceans. Large fish are usually not on their menu. They also don't feed on clams in the wild.

I'm treating the mag in my hospital tank using my DT's water and so far it seems to be responding to the treatment, that's an interesting observation though, I'll have to keep it in mind. Unfortunately testing that theory with a mag could be detrimental to its health, in most cases if you let it go through the inflate/deflate cycle too long it'll be irreparable as I'm sure you're aware. I only bring that up so that other users who may be researching treating a mag don't write off their sick anemone as a water quality issue, these animals are way too delicate to wait on taking immediate action.

I didn't feed a very large portion considering the size of the anemone (about 10"), however this was also the first time I had intentionally fed it so it may have needed a smaller one because of it. I have nothing but questions with this situation, it still bewilders me that it happened, I doubt I'll intentionally feed ever again because of it.

Thanks for the post sharing your experience.

LRS adds stuff to their food. For example, garlic. Not exactly a natural anemone food. As of recently, I believe they no longer add garlic, but you may have had an old batch, hence the freezer burn. They also add other things like fatty acids, beta carotene, and probiotics (as in bacteria). These things may be fine for fish. They may even be fine for anemones, but since most fish foods tend to be overloaded with additives, I think it is best to avoid any food with additives.

And FYI, I feed LRS to my fish and the nems will occasionally capture a piece. Have not noticed any issue. Just saying, maybe it is best to avoid target feeding stuff with all those extra additives. Hope it pulls through.

His older products did for sure, he listened to his customers and removed it due to the concerns revolving around long term use of it.

Yeah his website says it was removed in Jan this year. The fact that it lacks garlic reallly makes it a great option.
