Pufferfish

Guys,

My colleague has purchased a pufferfish as a birthday gift for me. This little guy seems cute, sits in his bag on my office table now.

I have a 14g Biocube and a quick search in google gave me an idea that my tank is to small. Anybody had experience with those? Shall i return it to LFS right away?

thanks for advice.

Well its going to outgrow that tank rather quickly also do you know what kind exactly it is?
They have tank requirements up to a min of 150 for a dog faced puffer. Need to know the exact species. Maybe you can post a picture if you don't know.

Personally it's a no brainer to return it as no matter what species it is you don't have enough tank for it to live in. It's the same thing as the people that go out and buy "Dori" the blue Hippo tang and they get one that is around an inch or so long and put it in a 10 gallon tank. Well their cute little Dori can become a foot and a half long very aggressive fish. So this said there was no point in even doing it while the fish was small. They grow and grow quickly.

There are a few puffer fish that can be kept in a 40 breeder tank but again there's no point in doing it for even a little while.

So go trade that puffer in on something that can live its life in a 14 gal tank. There are lots of nano fish to choose from http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aquarium-fish-supplies.cfm?c=15+2124

I am pretty sure its a Green spotted puffer. Will get to that store to return it asap. Shame that this people are basically making money on us and try sell you anything despite the fact that its inappropriate.

And nice that there are places like reefcentral, where you can ask for help and get consult on the situations like this.

thanks Dkuhlmann

You're welcome, I hate being the bearer of this kind of news but it needs to be said. Besides we here are not trying to make a buck off of you, just help you succeed with your tank and the critters you wish to keep.

You know the Green spotted puffer isn't even a saltwater fish? It's a brackish water species. That lfs really needs to have someone call them out on something like this. That fish is also very aggressive when matured and will eat other tankmates..
