Pulsing Xenia question

Lol, I just scraped off a whole rock full of the stuff that I flushed down the drain. lol. I can try to get some on some rubble for you.

No harm in loving a "common" or "easy" coral, you just have to treat it right to keep it from taking over. Keep it on an isolated island of rock and it will usually stay there.

Is it a proximity to other coral issue Gary or it doesn't matter? Meaning is there certain species they react more aggressively with or is it any other coral in the tank that sets them off?

Be afraid, be very afraid . Two corals that can take over a tank , Xenia and Kenya. Thankfully I have rid myself of both, although i still find a Kenya bud growing out of a rock every so often.

I keep both xenia and kenya in my refugium. The xenia is a fascinating coral. It's really in a hard to see place in the fuge, but I find myself peeking at it every time I do maintenance.

that's not a bad idea...unless it can spread through plumbing to the dt

any other corals inside a closed system will be affected to some degree or another. Of course, GAC, water changes etc. will help alleviate allelopathic warfare.

It's interesting to see pix of pulsing Xenia growing in the wild. It's often a "first colonizer". After a cyclone wipes out a reef it grows on the masses of dying coral skeletons. Calfo suggested using Xenia in a scrubber type arrangement but, (personally), I would never subject my reef aquarium to Xenia again. I will agree that it's an extremely interesting animal and it fascinates anyone that watches it. I had a TOTM that was loaded with Xenia.

Looking back at that aquarium.... thank goodness I've since learned about the toxicity of corals.
No more Clavularia, Pachyclavularia, Sarcophyton, Lobophytum, Sinularia or Xenia for me!

Luke, I've had a single pulsing xenia polyp for about 2 months now and it has yet to spread. Just be careful where you place it.

Glad your enjoying them, the SPS I got from you are doing well too. What's the name of the one I got from you that looks like a big stick, the one thats growing out of the water in the back of your tank.?

I have red sea pulsing Xenia in my SPS dominant reef. keep a few stalks on a rock separated from the rest of the tank. every once in a while I trim it down. If you are going to be at the ABC swap Nov 10th i will have some there.

this variant grows slowly for me.

Thanks. That would be a long drive for some Xenia lol.

I would love to go to a swap but I'll prob wait for one closer to home.
