I have pulsing xenia and had waving hand xenia. For all I know there could be others. You may have waving hand

While there's a lot of speculation, no one really knows why it pulses. But sometimes, it just doesn't. How is your tank different from where you bought it? Light, flow, etc?

i put the smallest powerhead i could find in the tank the otherday, but it looks like everything is getting thrashed around so idk. The light is the light that came with the eclipse 12 when i thought i was getting a "Nano reef aquarium". So i have to made a stand and dish out 300 bucks for a reflector and a T5 or MH light.

Sometimes pulsing xenia just stop pulsing. Mine stopped for 3 months for no reason at all, now they are pulsing away as if nothing happened. No rhyme or reason as far as I can tell

mine was pulsing where i got mine but after bringing it home it no longer pulses as well i am assuming its because i do not have a MH light. Or possibly a transitional period as the coral attaches to the live rock

Move it to an area of very low flow. The lower the flow the more pulsing you should see. The reason it pulses is because of the low flow and it does this to circulate water. If it is placed in a med. to high flow area it will not need to pulse.

turn off your pumps and they'll pulse. they to move food toward their mouth if you have enough current they wont need to do it.

k thanks, i'll try to find a "low flow area" and see what happens...would i need to get MH lighting? I'm gonna get it anyway, but was just wondering if xenia needed it

mine do fine under pc's also. how long have you had your xenia? it took mine a week or two to start pulsing. sometimes it does stop pulsing for a day or two, and then starts back. he really pulses after doing a water change.

bump? oh yeah, if i need to move my pulsing xenia to a low flow zone how come the xenia at my LFS is pulsing, and that thing is getting hammered by flow

Mine is doin great under PC lighting..growing like a week and pulses all the time...its under medium flow....I hear if your temp is too high they wont pulse as much but people Ive talked to say they like flow. Kind of mixed opinions about pulsing...Nobody knows for sure why they pulse but some studys show that in an aquarium they can just stop for no apparent reason.

Every answer posted here about why xenia pulse (to move water, to feed, etc.) is just speculation. Like ZooZ says, it's a mystery. No one knows why they actually do it.

Some people can't get them to thrive at all, for others (like me), xenia becomes a pest. Mine pulse all the time, in every tank I put them in, high flow, low flow, pcs, halides.
