When I first got a frag of the Purple Death it was nice and deep purple. But now its brown what gives??? Will the deep rich purple return or is it brown forever???

Yeah they are in direct light. If I put them in a shady spot will they become deep purple again?? Whats it with direct light??? Nuclear greens and other hold their color.

a couple things you nmeed to know abut PD's.....

They are picky and will apper brown until you find the happy spot in yur tank for light. I would generally agree with what has been said in concern to light, but everybodys system is different. i would start there, and give them time....adjust as needed.

As well, if you are expecting a super deep bright purple in comparison to somebodies over manipulated pics, or looking at a top down shot, you will never be able to match that deep of purple with them, but they can certainy get very purple just the same

I find that the higher your viewing angle, the more purple they become. So from the top looking down you have the deepest purple, kinda like how a clam has totally different color when you look at it top down instead of from the front of your tank.

So what I did is that I placed them farther back on the bottom of my tank so that the viewing angle makes you kinda have to "look down" on them, and this brought out the purple more.

Another thing I did was just mount them so that you are looking directly at the top of the polyp. Mine are kinda on a flat rock so imagine so instead of mounting them parallel to the tank, I mounted them vertically. Instead of _ they are l. if that makes any sense. ill try to get a picture up when the lights go on.

I used to hate these things, but now that they are purple they are one of my favorite things in the tank.

I have found that with unattainables and purple death is that they are deeper and richer in coloras small polyps than as larger ones IME. Maybe the color purple is just picky with light...

Not to hijack this thread but I have a question. I just got a frag aout 10 polyps of pd's they are in my 75g tank with 4 65watts pc bulbs. I have them towards the top does this count as being high light if I just have pcs?

Pie, if they start getting lighter on you, then bring them down a little. They coral will tell you if they're happy or not. Everyones tank is different, lighitng, environment, flow etc...

Its grown a new polyp in a week. They are always open and seem to be happy. But they are kinda dull unless you look from top down.
