Pylons Tank!

You're going to need to test the day after dosing - so you have an idea how much the 5ml raises the overall system. You need to do this until you get familiar with the zen of your system. you're going to need to do alot of testing over the next couple of weeks to get a feel. Plus, watch the inhabitants (I'm sure u already do). They'll tell you a great deal just form their actions.

Yeah, I had planned to test in tomorrow evening.
So far they look fine.
We'll see how it goes.

The directions says 5 ml is suggested for ever 20 gallons.
My tank is 29ish gallons..
Since the results were uncharted (low end) I figured i'd add a lttle bit at a time.

Unrelated note..
tomorrow I hope to get into town before the weather turns bad and hope to get some sand. If I don't get it tomorrow it probly wont be until next weekend.

The bad weather has been hitting here on the weekends so I really havn't had a chance to get it yet.

That's OK, slow and steady wins the race in this case. Take the bottle recommendations with a grain of salt. They are merely guidelines. Overdosing and underdosing by direction is easy to do. That's why it's so important to test.

Results were still uncharted, I added another 5 ML. Ihave a water change ready for tomorrow just incase it's too much.

Still uncharted, however I am useing more of the tet regeant..
If if my math is right about another 10 ml of Calcium mixture and I should be good... still adding 5ml at a time.

Looks like the tank may be starting to cycle.

Ph 8.2
Nitrate 5.0
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
Kh 107.4
Phos 0

Ca Not charitable.
I added another 5 ml of carbon composite
Shouldn't be much longer until my test kit can chart it.

Now for the pictures.

Did another calcium test tonight. Looks like it's getting really close. If I had to guess I'd say the calcium was around 360 PPM.

Took out the bad sand, put out the new sand plus some new friends. I'll get pictures up when my tank isn't cloud city.

Well, one of my new friends (peppermint Shrimp) Didn't make it.
I think I jinxed it by asking the clerk what would happen if this guy checked out a day or two from now.. getting home and having shrimp for dinner.
My other two friends (turbo snails) I havn't seen much movement from they could still be adjusting to the tank.
I had to rearrange the rocks, mostly because I couldn't remember how I had them in the first place. The side were three or four peices of rocks leading up and supporing the kaystone.. I have something almost like an enclosed cave now.. we'll see how it looks when everything is super clear.

OK, now you do realize that shrimp molt, right? What you're seeing could b fragments of old exoskeleton. It's pretty common after they've been moved. They usually hide for a couple of days after doing this. Check the system real good.

DJ

Yeah bro I know they molt.. I was hoping that was the case..

truth is I don't think much of anything survived the sand change.
My two new turbos haven't moved but maybe three inches in the last 20 hours. My other snails I don't think have moved at all.
My hermits (unless they are all on break) are all in their shells not doing anything.

I did check the salinity because I figured it would drop some with the change..
It did drop, but it's still with in good parameters.(1.021)
It had been at 1.024
I may add a quarter cup before I head out to my lfs.

O crap. You need to get it back up. Natural sea water runs btw 1.025-1.026. Do it slowly. Mix it up in a pitcher and add it slowly until it comes back up. That's prob why they're freaking out.

DJ

I added some in this morning. It's up to 1.022 now..
New friends are acclimating..
A new pepermint shrimp and a couple hermits..

I've seen some visible movement out of one of my Trubos and some movement in a couple of my hermits.

I've been pouring the salt -very slowly- into my overflow.. about a quarter cup at a time..
I know this is a no no with corals.. I hope it will be alright with just hermits and snails in the tank

I fel like a idiot. Right after I added my new guys I took the filter out and ddidn't turn the pumps off.. all that sand dust that was sitting on the bottom in the back section of my tank got stirred up and shot out the pumps..
It's starting to clear up.. I don't know how this is affeing the shrimp though.. he isn't moving around that much.. maybe he's just getting use to the tank.

I read through your whole thread. I really enjoyed seeing how patient you were and how you progressed. I started my first salt water tank this week and will be starting the same journey as you.

Glad to hear it! I've been fortunate to have alot of great help from this site.

Well.. Pepermint shrimp number 2 croaked today. I'll test my water tonight and then take some down to my LFS tomorrow and have it test it too.. if if there is anything wrong..
