Pylons Tank!

Yeah, I had mentioned them. The owner of ym LFS is gonna place a order on Monday for more. He only had about 8 Astrea Snails total and about ten hermits. Very lost for a LFS lol.

So maybe Mon or Tues I'll run down there again and get more.

My algea growth is through the roof and I am semi worried that this may be a problem down the road.. Should I pull some out or wait until I start to get fish/shrimp.

The planned order now is
1) More snails and Hermits probly a dozen of each total.
2.) Fire Shrimp
3.) Tiger Pistol and YWG
4.) two Clowns.

Possibly a a peppermint shrimp or something else that'll eat up all that algae.

Pace yourself with the CUC - too fast and you overshoot your balance point. Then you have to start getting rid of stuff to keep it from starving. I mean, that's fine if you have a contingency in place to pass off the excess critters, but that usually means giving things away. That can b expensive. So, in a nutshell, pace yourself, and u won't have to mess with all that.

Oh no this isn't all gonna be overnight. I'm thinking every couple weeks I'll get something.

However as it is now that algae is taking over the tank. I don't know if I should pull some out or get something that'll eat it.

if you can, manual removal is a very good method if fighting algae. Just watch and make sure that everything you grab comes out of the tank, or it will just spread. And I am fairly certain you haven't said anything about bubble algae, but if you have any of that, be careful not to pop, but if it's tough to pull off, might want to do this in a bucket of saltwater.

Have you read up on hermits? They can decimate the fauna in a tank.

Turbo snails are good w/algae. Maybe add 1 or 2 to start?

Yeah, I was thinking about a Turbo, my LFS was out of them.

As far as the hermits, I did read they came with some problems but not messing around with reefs. If they do lemme know :)

Test results for today.
Alk 89.5
Ph 8.4
Nitrate:0
Nitrite:0
Ammonia 0

I bought the red sea test kit for Calcium and it looks like I don't have enough, but I don't know by how much.
Anyone familiar with that test my second drop in the tube and it turned blue
I had .45 Ml Left in the syringe
I'll get pictures of the tank up tomorrow when my camera batteries are done recharging and the lights are back on. I do have some close ups of the hermits and snails. It may give you an idea of how much is in there.

Right after I put this guy in he cleaned nonstop for a few hours

This guy didn't move much at all after I put him in. He still hasn't moved much so I'm kinda worried about him.

first, try removing it by hand. I forget exactly, was all your LR fresh? And you are just starting the tank right?

If you are just starting and have no fish, you should not be feeding(or VERY little). Just try removing some by hand and waiting it out. From what I have learned on here, using an algae eating fish is usually a poor form of control, because being able to grow the right amount, vs too much or not enough algae for them can be tough.

"Water is getting low in the chambers in the back hence the bubbles. I have some warming up now to add."
Assuming you are just warming RO water and not salt water for your top off? IME/IMO you don't need to warm it for top off as it will not cause a big enough temp swing to worry about if you top off regurally.... might save you some trouble...

your tank os how old?? if its b/c if your in the first few weeks of your cycle lights should be off imo/ime(saves you all that algae problem), and how long do you have your lights on for?(also can cause algae) +1 on the heating of the water... you don't have to for top off. i save mine in a 5gl bucket at room temp. which is in the 70 either way.. a great investment is an ato (auto top off) safes you topping off every day and your pump wont get all those bubbles b/c it will always be leveled. just some friendly suggestions

One f the rocks was live rock and it was fresh. The rest was base rock. I also added a bag of live sand.

There was salt in the water. I needed to bump it up a bit.

Tomorrow will be the start of the 4th week.
For the first three weeks I was running the HQI lights for 12 hours a day. I was talking with someone at the LFS who suggested cutting it down to 7 hours a week and then bump out the light time an hour a week.
I think even though a new week is being started I may leave the lights on for just 7 hours.

I do not plan on getting an ATO.

Thanks for the suggestions..
I may even cut my lights back even more
and I'll most likely pull some out by hand.

Did some cleaning today in the tank. I pulled out a bunch of algae that was starting to fill the tank. I may go tomorrow and buy more hermits. I still see 2 of the original 3. I may purchase a couple more snails as well. I am debating on a cleaner shrimp.
