Pyramid Butterfly

I was never faced with a bacterial infection, I was told to find a api or seachem product for canada. I found methylene blue but that's as close as I got!

Good product to have on hand. I'm sure Seachem has a good antibacterial product.

Maybe look at paraguard or their sulfa product? Not used either before though.

Hey guys, quick update (i decided to post here instead of making a new thread, this can be a good reference for yellow pyramids)

I FINALLY GOT NITROFURACIN GREEN!!!

here are my question, they 3 are absolutely eating like pigs, i mean they will eat anything, however 2 of them have a little bumps beside their mouths, is this what you mean by mouth infection?

also how did you dose nfg? they recommend a 25% wc daily and 1/4 spoon daily for 10 days. What did you guys do?

any other recommendations?

they are acting healthy otherwise

If I am using NGP just as a prophylactic then I just dose once when new fish arrive. If I am actively treating, as I did with my pyramids, then I follow the directions on the package. Don't recall bumps necessarily; mine just developed white rims to the lips and in the case of one fish part of the lower lip actually came off. To this day it still has an under slung mouth, but doesn't seem to bother it. Very easy and aggressive feeders once they settle in. And they grow quite quickly.

I'd agree with calorie on everything, especially with the symptoms, mine had the exact same thing.

The only pointer I might add is to dissolve the powder in a seperate container prior to adding it to the aquarium to make sure it is completely in solution .

I think way back in this thread I noted that one of my four pyramids had had a worse mouth infection than the other three (though they all had it to some degree) to the point that part of the lower jaw actually fell off. The fish survived, and all four went into my display 9 months ago. However, I have been noticing that of the four, the one with the jaw deformity was not growing and was thinner that it's brethren, though not emaciated. Just this week I see only three of the four; the smaller one presumably has died and become CUC food. I feed this tank a lot, and hard to really manage even higher food input, but I think with the mouth deformity, this fish was not able to fully compete and ultimately died as a result. Lesson is that while mouth problems can be initially cured, the fish may still not survive long-term and underscores the importance (particularly with these fish) of getting good specimens.

Really, true for all butterflies. They are notorious for injuring their mouths during shipping.

That's good to know! I'm a long time reef guy, and would you believe that these pyramids are actually the first, and only, butterflyfish I've ever tried.

My pyramids, after QT and in the DT.

Beautiful Peter!

Mine are doing well but one still has the whiteish mouth like calore described. Despite that they are the two most aggressive feeders in my tank. They out compete all of my wrasses, my two tangs and even my genicanthus angel at feeding time. Great fish.

Beautiful!!

How did you qt them? All steps from day 1?

Thanks! They went through cupramine, and prazi, but still ended up with some weird white bumps in the DT. I actually prazi'ed the entire DT because of them. Whether that did anything to resolve the issue or not, I have no idea. But at the end of the day, I may have introduced something that I wouldn't know how to treat anyway. Everyone is looking fine now though.

I would say mine are OK eaters. Not as aggressive as other fish in the tank, but it's a crowded FOWLR, not a reef, so....

Peter, i am really curious about this white bump you are talking about.

i am convinced cupramine was the cause, this is why i am so curious to see if anyone actually successfully treater a pyramid butterfly with cuprimine without having the white bump issue.

if it is what i am thinking, i can tell you its not contagious

Is there any difference between yellow pyramids from Hawaii or Indonesia or Papua/New Guinea? I assume an Hawaiian pyramid would be preferable because of less shipping time and better collection technique. Worth a little more?
