OK, so it's official, I have AEFW. I don't know whether to be mad, sad, or happy that I finally found out why I've been having problems with some of my acros for so many months now

Anyways, here's the plan. Let me know what you guys think.

I'm thinking of setting at a 40-60g tank. I already have a nice 3' tall DIY recirc skimmer with a sedra 5000. I'm thinking a simple elevated eggcrate bottom, to allow nice rotational flow.

I plan on using the levamisol dips.

Is MH necessary for the duration of their stay in the QT? I don't care if they brown out (I'm sure they will from the dips anyway).

Sounds good. IMO MH isn't absolutely needed. I just had a bout with these and lost over half of my acros because I didn't think to control the ph. My ph went down to 7.3, wish I would have set up a kalk drip. Other than that I had everything covered and the treatments were going well with fluke tabs.

Ooo, didn't think about pH. Good call.... would perhaps the addition of live rock in isolated locations help? What type of filtration did you have on the QT?

Don't think rock would help much with ph. I would drip kalk and monitor the ph.

Only filtration I had was cabon in a phosphate reactor. Along with weekly changes of carbon, and weekly water changes, the only issue I had was the ph.

Sorry to hear but that's what I suspected seeing your pictures. So many people have long drawn out problems with STN only to find out a few months or even years later that's what it is.
IMO I don't think Mh lighting is a necessity either. T5's or even VHO's if you have either convienant should work well. The one thing that really got me was not being prepared to deal with the slime created by large colonies after they are stressed after the treatments. A good skimmer on the system is worth messing with IME for this reason. Here are some links that might help:

hth and good luck, Chris

Thanks chris....yes, the skimmer I have should suffice. Problem is, with summmer coming, I may need another chiller :(

OK, the QT tank is almost done. 60g. Vortech for circulation. NM recirc skimmer with sedra 5000. Aquaclear 500 for cemical/mechanical filtration. 2 x 54W T5's low Kelvin for light.

From what I've read, minimum of 3 dips one week apart each in levamisol (150mg/gallon water).

Questions - how long for each dip? And where can I buy the levamisol?

TIA.

oh peter, that sucks, i hope you kill them quick.

sorry about that.

Thanks :) I'm actually taking it pretty well...the tank is doing great otherwise...this is just a good excuse to thin out my acro numbers anyways :D

thats how it always works, when everything is going right. its like the SPS pest dont get out of control until their food gets really healthy...

LOL, yeah, apparently they only eat acros when they get REALLY colorful

Just a couple months ago.....same coral is now half eaten, and solid tan in color :(

And this came off of it after a FW dip:

sup Peter,

Sorry to see that man... That's exactly what happened to my Valida.. once a very colorful piece before it turned to crap. What I did was I dipped ALL acro colonies in fluke tab (1 tablet = 3 gal of SW) and scraped ALL the eggs. I repeated this process for at least 3 more days until no more AEFW's fall off. I have been AEFW free for about 6 months now - no QT was used.

You also have to go through the tedious task of scraping the eggs.. It's a LOT of work, but it's a "punishment" for reefers who don't dip or QT

Well, I have to do a QT since with my aquascaping, repeated dips of corals in the main display is impossible without regluing each time. Not an option.

Funny thing is I did dip all my new corals. AEFW don't fall off that easily. I found at least 3X dose of an iodine dip is necessary...and the corals hate it.

OK, well, if I can't find the levimasol powder, I'll get the fluke tabs then. Where did you buy them?
