Question about mixing clowns

might be a mistake but my LFS said no issues...

I have a female ORA Naked Ocellaris (A. ocellaris) (bought a pair, the smaller male died, actually disappeared on day).

My LFS had a good deal on some baby (born in Aug) onyx clowns (A. percula), it's about half the size as the ocellaris now.

the new percula took right to the ocellaris and started to hang with her, there was a bit of the ocellaris nipping back at him, but nothing major.

they've been together almost a week now, no agression, I even see the "sleeping" together when the lights are off, they both hang together very closely toward the top front of the aquarium.

Woudl these two ever pair up? or is that someting that doesn't happen due to the species? will I have issues as the little guy gets bigger?

thanks!

I have 4 species of clownfish in my 120. One Maroon Gold Bar, One Tomato Fire, one Saddleback and two chocolate Perculas. I bought them all at once and added them in together. It was pretty cool to watch them find their territories. It will be very interesting to watch them when I introduce 2 BTAs at the end of the month.

I don't know how long you have had all these species together, but you will eventually not have as many one day. It is ill-advised to mix as many species as you have. While percs and Ocellaris can be mixed, many cross-breed mixings (such as perc and maroon) while on occasion can work, generally end in dead fish. I would recommend you decide which species you like best and stick to one.

We have a small baby potential Onyx, a black saddleback and a tank raised osc without any issues so far. I'm holding out hope they can survive together, the two bigger ones are actually pretty chill and don't host. The smaller guy hosts his GBTA.

The local fish store of the OP is a jackass, probably never saw an ADULT CLOWN.

The adult dominance of clowns is way different from the live and let live of juveniles, for the juveniles that is survival. The lethal dominance is also a suvival mechanism of the adults. Its a natural timeline from surviving as a young fish and a weak swimmer to setting out a territory as an adult in preparation for reproducing the species, driving off and killing intruders is the natural behavior of an adult who as a juvenile was happy to live and let live.

For more years then I can remember I have read of ''my clowns have all been together for _ years'', and then I read a few months later that there was a bloodbath amongst the clowns. You can try to go against what is programmed inside them, but it will be what it will be.

What really ticks me off is when I read of someone who has some wild caught never CB species in their tanks, mixed and just waiting for the eventual dominance issues to arise, as they will.

End of rant,

read and study about the fish, BEFORE you bring them home. You'll be a lot happier with your fish.

Actually, his LFS is correct. While that is true for a bunch of clowns, it isn't true for an ocellaris and percula pairing. Many people have had pairs of these two different clowns. They will actually breed also. It seems as though clownfish have as hard of a time telling the difference between ocellaris and percula as hobbyists do. If they're already getting along well, they'll probably be fine together.

While mixing different species of clowns in usually a no no, the mixing of Ocellaris and Percula is totally fine and is actually very common in this hobby. Them breeding is also very common. We get Perc/Ocellaris hybrids in all the time.
