Question for Centropyge Experts - Please Help

To QT or not QT????

I'm planning on adding a Flame Angel and I'm concerned about putting it in QT since they are rock grazers and my QT only has pvc pipe. I'm wondering if it would be in the flame's best interest to put him into the DT after full acclimation?

The LFS I'm buying him from is very ethical (rare I know) and they don't allow the fish to be sold until they see them eat and behave normally for a few days, I've always had healthy and disease free fish from them.

Oh, I plan on buying him today or tommorrow...Please Help

can you take a piece of LR out of your display or sump if you're concerned? Also, if he's eating at the LFS, then he should eat for you. I think he'll be ok in QT for a couple of weeks.

Agreed. If the QT is well established, there should be some algal growth/diatoms on the glass which the angel will pick on. I've quarantined all of my angels with no ill effects. The live rock is also a good idea, providing the Q tank has not been medicated.

I've always believed in QT but after having two bristletooth tangs die unexpectedly (ordered from LA divers den)while in QT I posted to get some answers. Someone posted that since the bristletooth is a rock grazer and is most comfortable with ample rockwork and since the QT doesn't supply much rockwork that that could have been the problem. So when I bought a third bristletooth off divers den of the same species as the other two, and placed him directly into my DT he's been doing great!

So I was wondering if I should do the same with the Flame Angel?

Oh, and my QT hasn't had light in a long time so I don't have much algae growth.

Also, what kind of disease do flame angels most commonly get?

For a flame you would be fine with QT.

For some of the more fickle Centropyge's I wouldn't. When I got my Potter's it went right into my tank.

(( should be noted that while I understand the benefits and reasons behind QT, I personally don't. I feel that putting them into a healthy tank with existing live rock is better. Been doing it that way for 10+ years and have yet to lose a fish because if it ))

One of the guys that owns a local LFS told me the same thing Toddrtrex. I couldn't believe my ears, but he swears by just dumping em in (after acclimation) and he's got one of the sickest tanks around. Actually, several of the sickest tanks around.

I don't have the cajones....

While they're both grazers of sorts, a pretty good portion of a Bristletooth Tangs diet is detritus. They can sometimes be difficult to get to take prepared foods as well. I'd say a Flame Angel would be much better suited to a QT environment than a Ctenochaetus.

I had my flame in a bare low salinity hospital tank four 4 weeks recently and he was fine. He eats anything I throw at him.
