question for dog lovers

Not sure about seafood exactly but the "Blue" brand dog good contains no "by product" or "by product meal" and contains real chicken, seafood, etc.

I've not heard of using seafood as an ingredient on dog food. Cat food? Yes. But not dog food.

I guess I should read that Iams label more closely!

Blue Buffalo has a salmon mix in which the only protein is salmon and the veggies are potatoes and peas. Wellness has an ocean mix that is multiple types of fish for protein. Is this for junior?

I second the Origen 6 fish. We feed that to our Bullmastiffs with wonderful results. A warning however..it smells strongly like fish.

We've been reading up on different foods to get away from the by product, corn, and the cheaper grains. Is it preferred to get away from chicken and lamb and go with something that is entirely fish?

I suppose it depends on who you're feeding but those that know more about dog foods please enlighten us.. THANKS!

In terms of getting away from by product and grains, I suggest all do it for the health of your pet. Excessive shedding, hotspots, upset stomach, dandruff, excessive eye staining and other common dog problems(and cat) are most often the result of a food allergy. Simply switching to a grain free and by product free food usually fixes these symptoms. If the problems persist, it is time the switch protein source, this is where salmon comes in. Salmon has become the most popular choice, red meat, lamb and even kangaroo are the other popular choices. It is important to remember to check ingredients carefully if you are trying to eliminate any of the above symptoms because you want to make sure there is only one type of protein (example, just fish, no chicken protein at all).

Orijen is the best, followed closely by Evo, then Wellness and Blue(the grain free versions). Taste of the Wild is a great bang for the buck option. Frohm and the different Innovas are great too but most of the recipes are holistic and not grain free. (This is my opinion, not absolute fact.)

If anyone wants samples(except Wellness, Frohm and Blue) I know someone that get a lot of them. :)

Just to add quickly, if you are changing from 1 grain free food to another, you can change the food very quickly(mix for a few days), but if you are coming from purina or whatever was on sale at Wegmans last week your dog will go through a detox period. Switch very slowly, do the 10% rule. Day 1, 10% new, 90% old. Day 2 20% new, 80% old etc etc.

And a few last things....

Some people are put off by the price, don't be. Yes, per pound it costs more, but each cup of a high quality grain free food has 50-60% more calories than your standard grocery store brand, which means you feed 50-60% less food, quickly offsetting the higher cost.

Also, if your vet recommends Purina, or is selling you a $100 bag of "prescription" corn filled Science Diet(check the ingredients), it is time to change vets.

I'm pretty involved with dog training and pet nutrition. One of the forums i belong to has a strong veterinarian presence. One member in particular is a nutritionist\ performance specialist that has worked for several industry giants. Dog food companies cannot prove that dog food A is better than dog food B. Purina for example , cannot prove that their performance feed is superior to their bargain ,grocery food. The industry is essentially unregulated. Dog food claims are unsubstantiated. Dogs are omnivorous . Spend enough time around domestic and wild canines, and nothing consumed will shock you. By product\ offal is cherished by all dogs. Next time you drive by bloated deer carcass, observe what the coyotes eat first . Alaskan sled dogs are rarely fed commercial food. Pet food is processed crap for the most part. Convenience is only reason to feed it . I can't fathom a reason to reef fish dog food.
